are there many solo female "wilders" out there? or even solo, male wild campers. it is great to be your own boss but it is hard paying for the fuel all by yourself. what are your advantages/disadvantages of being solo?

could'nt resist this one as man camping on my own
I think it's the "silence" and having the remote control
Ah bliss :0)

Hi,
Yes I am a lone camper, wild and otherwise. Only last week I was wild-camping overlooking Ullswater. Yes I agree and sympathise with the cost as fuel keeps on rising. But the the I miss is someone to walk along the beach with, admire the sun-sets and also to make the decision as to where to go. Yes Merlin, I dont have to suffer Corry or East enders. But hey I would even suffer that for a bit of company.
Having said all that, you could always join "The Loners Group".

Best wishes

Don

The only Lone lady I knew of on here was 'Lady Barnet' and she went and bought a static caravan at Aldeburgh!

Lone wildcampers.

If it was'nt for my youngest son/all his mates/my grandson(jack)/and Jack the dog:eek:, I would be a lone camper:D
They prick their ears everytime I pick up the keys:D

BTW If I went on my own, the wife would think I have a Fancy woman:eek::eek:

I wouldn't dare wildcamp on my own, would probably be awake all night worrying. Would be good if a few of us got together though. If there was someone in the next van with a mobile it wouldn't be so bad. (BTW, wouldn't be completely alone, would have a child with me).

It would be very wise for anybody not just a female to have a mobile phone when wilding alone

Steve

wildcamping on your own is ok, but please dont broadcast your location.
you dont know who's reading these threads. I dont want to be a scaremonger
but I must stress there are some strange people out there!
take care, be safe,
a mobile phone is a necessity

Yes I always carry a mobile with me anyway. What I meant by the above post was I would want someone else who I knew in the next van, and we both have each others phone numbers just in case.

wild loners

i do agree about taking care with locations being broadcast on the net. yes, there are a few funny folk out there and that mobile phone doesn't always function in parts of scotland, you have to run up the nearest hill to dial 999. after saying that i love being a wild loner and
Don when you want to share the sunset with someone ,i find the local wild life willing to listen and they don't answer back.

Solo

Hi Irene, ADVANTAGE's- to many to list,DISADVANTAGES- have to do ALL the cooking & washing up,have to take the dog out in the rain, no-one to change the tyre if I get a puncture.:D.Better stop now in case I get bard or even worse.Sorry hen but you DID ask. ROFL.
snowgoose.

i have wildcamped quite a bit on my own & always a good idea to have a mobile right next to you when sleeping & to have the van keys handy...i slept on the rd outside my mums for a while and hadnt had any probs at all,but then i decided to sleep inside mums house on 1 sunday night as it was particularly cold.good job really as 2 lads tried to break into the motorhome at 6am and were frightenend off by my neighbour going to work,im not sure what i'd have done waking up to some1 trying to get into the motorhome but i know id have been scared witless...:(

solo

incase people are scared of by "break in events", i.ve camped solo many, many times and have had no bad experiences. most of my solo stuff has been in Scotland and maybe we,re a bit safer up here. how many people have had first hand experience of attempted break ins ,in this country? just to put things in perspective.

Sound advice make sure you have a signal on your mobile when wilding

In our experience wilding is safe, get off the beaten tracks, in 2005 we spent 3 months travelling UK/Europe and never had a problem, last year we spent 7 months UK/Europe, but had two attempted break ins (France & Spain) - both in places we had been warned away from by other travellers. In the UK we had some idiot bang on the van and then flash headlamps until I drove off and found somewhere else.

It really gets back to recognising a safe area, close to main roads, motorway services, etc are all less safe IMHO due to ease of access and exit for potential thieves, higher volumes of through traffic means more chance of the opportunistic thief. I also avoid areas which have a lot of rubbish lying around - beer cans and bottles are a clear sign that the area attracts the type of people that will find it amusing to wind up the camper's occupants after a slab of beers.

I'd say the more remote a site you choose the greater the safety.

Thought you were going to make an offer I couldn't refuse LOL.

My rules for wild camping are simple. Never park so that I am hemmed in, space behind for manouvering.

Thermal screen is Internal and can be removed without opening doors.

Ignition keys at hand to enable quick start and drive away.

and the good old base ball bat, just in case I awoke whilest they are actually in the van.

would much prefer to carry my 12 bore, but I dont think the police would be too thrilled.

Safe wilding, and hope to meet up with some of you eventually.

Don

just an idea , hows about a singles area so all you single members out there can post and mabey get together. you never know we may have a wildcamping marrage at sometime.:D:D:D

marriage of wild campers

that would be some event. how many site members to be invited? who can suggest a wild venue for the reception and would the cake have to have four wheels?
