Winterising the Cassette loo!!

I had to empty the cassette loo on the Merlin today and I noticed ice in the fill up trough for the rinse water. This led me to read the info sheet on the back of the locker door which recommends emptying the system in winter, and in fact shows how to do it. I drained it off, but my missis has diabetes and needs to use the loo quite often, so as a temporary measure I will carry a bottle of rinse water, but is it possible to mix antifreeze in the loo to prevent it freezing,or will that ruin the seals? I have drained the water heater and emptied the tanks too. Hey channa, I'm an old Parsons Cross boy!:D

I have had a scour around on the net a few sites specifically say never use car anti freezze and that there is a specialist antifreeze you can use.

Me I have flushed mine all into the cassettte :)

I always thought that pink rinse fluid acted as antifreeze.

I think you would be safe with a little salt in the flush tank. Brine is a good antifreeze, and since urine can contain quite large quantities of salt, the seal would have to be resistant to salt otherwise it would not last long at all.

Dont use car antifreeze, i used it last year and this year in the summer had to replace all the seals, Well you learn by mistakes, thats my theory.

I won't be doing that then :D :D
I think I need to buy some of the pink stuff or some proper antifreeze before xmas week at carrock. I've been using elsan in the waste tank as I had a gallon hanging around.

Try Spain - its the best anti-freeze I've ever used!

Thanks for starting this thread Norris. :D

I have a feeling I forgot to empty mine before I put the van in storage. I hope its alright.:confused:

It will have to wait a bit as my central heating has been acting up fot 2 days. I think I have cracked it now (fan problem) but I might have to put the van on the drive and live in there for a while.:eek:

Thats the plan next winter :)
Mind you is a lovely day here in gloucester today, minus 2 but its so sunny I might fire up the BBQ in the sun trap we have in the garden :)

Nice down here too.
Not windy like yesterday,so it has been really pleasant today, and people dont forget to tip the postie and dont be a tight arse:)

Just been outside to check our cassette loo, -6deg last night. loo is ok, but initialy could not open the door due to a small amount of condensation build up on the door seal, and that froze:eek: at least I know the heater is doing it's job on the frost stat:D

Happy Camping:)
