hoping to tour round the perpignan area and as far , well as far towards italy as we can get in our alotted time. would appreciate tips on good sites , not necessarily near the coast, but a nice beachy area always welcome. gps co-ordinates would be of great help, can take a peek then on google earth.

It is very easy to wild camp around the Leucate area, which is only 20 minutes out of Perpignan. Very popular with the wind and kite surfers - plenty of handy watering stations. Some official spots and some unofficial ones there.

We tend to hide up at La Franqui, just round the corner from Leucate. At this time of year you can park up next to the Boules pitches, near the Tourist Information office. Ignore the No Camping sign - we have never had a problem out of season. It also offers some protection from the prevailing west winds.

The only thing about going down there at this time of year is the often biting trade winds off the Pyrennes. Got there one Christmas and it nearly cut us in half it was so cold and windy. So headed on into Spain and down to the Elba peninsular to escape the Tramontana winds.

Nice area to visit though - so enjoy

Just remembered there was also a good over night place at Avignon. It was a park and ride carpark out on the western edge of the town, where they then (2 years ago now) let MHs stop overnight.

You might also consider the France Passion system. If you are not familiar with this it is a scheme you join for a nominal fee (cira £20 I seem to think) and you get a book of all the hospitable farmers/vineyards who welcome you to their land for zero fee. We have stayed in some wonderful places and been made to feel exraordinarily welcomed. Great location at Uzes (which is on your route and a fascinating old town) spings to mind. Another in southern Provance - but there are loads to choose from. Go to http://www.france-passion.co.uk/?gclid=CPf55OaaxpcCFUog3godbm0ISg for more information.

HI, pick up a copy of camperstop, or when in france the french book on stopovers available in all middlesize newsagents. This will show you all the sites all over france and in the case of the camperstop book all over europe, some are free and some are around 4 euros per night and some are more these days. there are lots of free sites down in the south of france.
if you run tom tom, there are a lot of poi,s for sites.
