Wilding near Oban Info Please

Hi, Travelling to Oban next week. I noticed the posts in ref. to this location are quite old. Anyone have any current information on overnighting in or very close to the town?

Hello Bonny Lad,

The one marked as LR Kilmore on the A816 was used by me last year and was no problem. It had a 'no overnighting' sign up, a simple white one that means nothing. It is not directly overlooked by houses and should be OK.

Another possibility but it is just hearsay is North Connel just North of Oban on the A828. Turn right just over the bridge. A look at google earth might show up somewhere there.

We were up at Benderloch recently and I noticed the occasional surfer overnighting on Tralee Bay. You turn left in Benderloch (signed Kiel Croft I believe) it is directly opposite the CC CL (less than one mile after the turn) and go down a track and through a gate to the beach. If it is only for one night then you might be OK. It is only passable in a PVC (which I think you have).

Good luck.

Bonawe as accessed from the A85 at Talnaught (at brown sign for The Old Iron Furnace) is great and close to Oban - we were there two weeks ago.

Struggling to locate this place using Google Maps ... can you give us the latitude/longitude please?

Thanks :)

Brochroy Jetty - Idyllic

Turn off A85 onto B845 in Taynuilt 12 miles short of Oban and follow as far as you can possibly go (only about 1 mile), past the first jetty to the second. You'll know it when you get there because if you don't stop you'll end up in Loch Etive!

OS 50k Sheet 50, grid ref 011327. 56.444419,-5.22799 in Google Earth.

I stayed there one night with no trouble in a Romahome in April 2009. Fantastic views, but watch those tides!

This spot is already in the POI download :)

Thanks for the recommendation.

We stayed here 56.463012,-5.305694 which is a few miles along the north shore of the loch from the bridge. A small spit with a track about 100yds long to what is probably a fishermans spot.

Nice spot :) Added to the POI database - thanks ...

The kerrera ferry parking is ok for an overnight and very close to the town. go straight past the main ferry terminal and follow the road single track in places until you come to the ferry car park. We have used this on a number of occasions but arrive late and leave early so as not to interfere with the ferry traffic as it is only a foot ferry and people need somewhere to park. Not sure how good it is in high season but is good at other times.

Quiet spot

Karrera ferry CP works
Ganavan Bay does not! I was dubious as the map showed a campsite nearby, but that has gone and there is residential development. Many signs saying no overnight sleeping, too many locals who could complain.
But if you want a quiet spot, go up the B845 to NM 98140 36989. Space for one unit in a quiet valley; sat worked, but no radio.
South of Oban, we were put off by No Overnight Parking at 2 locations on Loch Feochan. Try the widening at NM 98140 36990.
The listed Loch an Loggainn Mor (NM 869120) is great for one unit, if you have the nerve to get up the narrow, embanked single track road!

Thanks for the updates - your second grid reference for the 'widening' seems wrong ... it's the same as the B845 spot.

Please can you check this for me?

Thanks

Chris

Sorry for incorrect grid ref and delay, been away wilding / walking....
Widening is at NM 80055 19963

Fearnoch

Apologies for the late entry, you've been & come back by now, but for others we were up there a couple of weeks ago. Tried the Tynault jetty but water was v high, so went down the road a little and ended up on high ground in Fearnoch forest NM 964 322. A large'ish 2 level fairly flat carpark, with access to the bike trails & forest walks. No "prohibited" signs or anything, very peaceful, no other vans there (but there may be now!).
I suspect it would be no good in summer due to midges but this time of year was perfect, ground hard despite the rain.
