Wilding in Portugal ?

Not long now till we on our way to Portugal for 2 months. our intention is to be wild camping as much as we can..happy to use sites for washing clothes &
bedding, using swimming pool, and charging batteries for our electric bikes.
However, we have just been told by a friend of ours, who was told by a friend of their, who was told by a friend of theirs, ..that wild camping is totally outlawed and illegal now on the Algarve, and frowned upon elsewhere.
Can anyone honestly clarify the position on this..from first hand experience lately?
We will be going and finding out for ourselves anyway, but the couple who are going to be our running mates are getting a bit 'jittery'.

Hi I was in Portugal 6 month last winter came back to UK in April 09 all I can tell you is that some parts of the algarve they stopped free camping some they don't seem to bother , as for the rest of Portugal I never had any problems you can park up on the barrier-gems they are for people to camp, so don't let scaremongers put you off I off to Portugal my self in March mite bump in to you, Good luck happy traveling, BOB.

Hi, We had several weeks in Portugal in March / April last year. However we prefer the northern beaches & meandering along the Douro river. Did not experience any problems re wilding. In fact northern Portugese locals encourage you to stay longer. Go to - Portal y foro de usuarios de furgonetas camper - then hit the
"Mapa Furgoperfecto" logo for wilding spots. Hope this helps.

We were there in March last year & found no problem along the Algarve all the way up to Figuarez da Foz, that's as far as we got before heading home. We are off on the 19th Feb. & intend to head straight to Portugal this year as we enjoyed it so much. Have read reports about willdc amping being banned but from personal experience & the people we spoke to there doesn't seem to be a problem. We used the MAP OF STOPPING PLACES you can also download the places to your satnav. Just zoom in to the area you want for more details & use something like Babelfish to translate the links.
We also found that we could get internet almost everwhere :) , we asked at the tourist information in one place & they gave us a user id & password to log on to their wifi.

We came back from the Algarve on 14th November last, we had spent 9 weeks down there and out of that JUST 3 nights were on a campsite.

Yes there are places where they have stopped you wild camping, Lagos is one and i did hear Cabanus was another but there is a very nice Aire at Castro Marim just on the border with Spain and you will find a lot of vans at Villa Real wild camping and they tend to use the Aire at Castro Marim for filling and emptying as it is only a couple of miles away.

Just a few miles west you can stop at Altura ok but better still another 2 miles west you will find around 80 vans parked up at Manta Rota, a very nice little village where we felt very welcome and spent a couple of weeks.

Alvor was ok for a few days and Quateria was fine at Forto Nova also Sagres at the old Fort.
There are places where you can stop ok just be sensible and park for a few days and even weeks but not camp and by that i mean no tables and chairs left out etc otherwise they tend to move them on.

When you consider the number of motorhomes on the Algarve there are not that many campsites open and without the wild campers they would be overrun.

don't stop on the motorway

I've stayed in Portugal without a problem. One big mistake to avoid is being on the toll road for more than 12 hours. Obviously, we can't read the instructions on the toll ticket but somewhere it tells you that you pay a massive uplift if you stay beyond 12 hours. We parked up at about 7 pm and left at about 9 am. The cost was about 44 euros and we did about 20 miles on the toll.

I don't know if I should do this !!!

Pop across to Motorhome Fun and have a chat with JJ he wildcamps all the time in Portugal and is a mine of information !!...:)
The Orbitur chain of campsites are open all year and they have free wi-fi !!!
