Not a bad idea, but try and find a different venue each night. Same old story, respect people's entrances, parking spots etc. Good luck.

we have parked up for the night in london once or twice in residential areas, golders green area or the hendon area just off the m1 staples corner area , and found it ok .but we lived in london for a while and sort of know our way round there if get my drift ,there are quite a few no go areas during the day not to mention night time . if you will be there for a few nights try to find a pub on the outskirts that will let you stay on the car park best bet , if not then an industrial estate preferably in company with some overnighting lorries. we used to live at chadwell heath near barking just off the north circular there were quite a few places round that area and it was a pretty ok place but that was a few years ago now , london and its outskirts is not the place realy to just turn up and park you realy need to get further out for safety

Hi,

Need to be in Southwark

Sorry don't know it that well but my wife (a londoner) says its a bit rough and you would be better heading further out. I would head out towards Blackheath and Greenwich park.

noooo southwark as is said bit iffy, give the south of the river a miss.the only place i would give a thought to south of the river is greenwich not that far from southwalk .it is actualy quite a nice place

There was a thread a few months back which gave some decent places and answers/links for overnighting in central London instead of a load of doom and gloom about reasons not to go there, LOL. If you search you may find it. I think there was a link to a VW forum where the Q was asked and they were more on the ball for this subject.

You are fine south of the river I lived there for three years. My wife grew up in Woolwich. You should find a safe spot Croyden, Bexley, or Bromley. Further out is gravesend and the docks but I have not been their for many years. The reason I suggest Blackheath and Greenwich is that it is close and a very nice area. Had many a nice meal in Blackheath. My children used to love to feed the squirrels in Greenwich park. They will run up your trouser legs to take peanuts in their shells out of your hand.

Don't know Southwark very well but my eldest son lives in Streatham - about 5 or 6 miles away - and we regularly safely park up for a few days outside his flat. I suspect you can find "rough" and safe areas within a couple of streets of each other all over London - just assume that there will be somewhere suitable nearby and use your common sense when looking. The usual signs apply - look for somewhere with streets wide enough and uncrowded enough not to annoy the neighbours and streets without grafitti, broken glass etc - also look for any damage done to locally parked cars. Somewhere near where you want to be I'm sure you will find a suitable place. Happy travels.

I have already registered my motorhome for LEZ exemption when it comes in for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes in january 2012

Just to finish the thread off - I only stopped for the one night in the end.

Parked just round the corner from the office on Great Suffolk Street.

I had to pay to park during the day (I didn't mind as I can claim this back). But there were lots of on Street parking bays free from 18:30 to 08:30 hrs which suited me fine.

Thanks
Matthew

Yes, good move, but how much to park during the day, and does your van fit into a standard bay? I seem to remember that Southwark Council are a bit keen on that.

hi,

Yes parking during the day was very expensive - I paid £14. But I claim this back just as I would any parking fee when on Business.

The Bays were continuous and just marked an area of road you could park on. But I would just squeeze my van into a single.

Most places are Permit parking only, not sure how you get a permit and how much they cost, might be worth investigating.

I checked on Southwarks website, they have very good parking maps.

Cheers

Hi

I am surprised how cheap that is for a days parking.

I think you would need to be a resident or a business rate payer to get a permit, or maybe demonstrate a need (such as a mobility issue) but then it is a while since I lived in Southwark.
