Wildcamping Price Comparison for a week

So Wildcamping with a day or two on site a week for water/toilet disposal etc.... So I guess that makes 5 days wilding and 2 on a campsite of some sort.

Now for the price comparisons. How much in the UK (or parts of it) and how much in France or anywhere else you care to mention? ;)
 
Hi Alan I know you're right but still that move to living totally off-grid alludes me for now. I'm not doing too badly though :dance:
 
Well we had a fortnight heading up to Islay & back recently. We had a site at Silverdale (Mrs Smaug didn't like to camp on the beach as it was "too near the houses & they mightn't like it". She also stressed about the tides even tho I could prove it was neaps & therefore safe, so we spent a tenner for parking in a field.

Next night was at the Falls of Clyde, a freebie & then we went to an ex-Forrestry Commission site at Ardgarten with hook-up, & topped up the water tanks at £16.50. After that we were on Islay & wild every night, topping up water at a boat yard after asking where we might find water. Loos were emptied at a public toilet, food bought locally. On the way home we went wild at a Forrestry Commision pic-nic site N of Inverary, then at a fully serviced site (EHU & Wifi) near Rockcliffe & finally wild again in the Lakes at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass.

So that's 3 sites @ under 50 squid total & 12 freebies. Mind you I think we spent about 400 squid on fuel, plus normal housekeeping costs for food (no meals out) - oh and another 150 squid on Malt whiskies! S 600 squid for a fortnights excellent holiday for 2 & a jack Russell - with several happy memories sitting in the booze locker for future enjoyment. We finished off a part gas bottle too, but weren't able to replace it easily until we got home.
 
Mrs Sam cannot wash her hair without an electric hair dryer, so twice a week we stay in a Club CL with electrics for £10-£12. Once a fortnight we stay in a proper Club Site so that we can use the laundry, and have a proper shower at about £20. So the cost per week is about £25. This gives me a bit of peace and quiet and she doesn't have to beat my shirts to death on a stone in the river.
 
If you are near a canal.

You can get water and empty your loo if you have a sanitary station key which costs about £10 from a boatyard. Not strictly ethical, but not illegal either.:)
 
Just for info, our general strategy is to have a site in mind but only use it if we don't come across a wild spot that is acceptable to us both. Often the wild spots are far nicer, but Mrs Smaug will sometimes insist on a "proper site" for the extra facilities.
 
We spent 23 nights away, mainly in Wales, at a cost of £127 for sites. We stayed on Shell Island for 4 nights (£10.50 per night ) Gwern-y-Blwch CC site 3 nights (£11 per night inc electric) and Bromyard CC site for 2 nights (£11 per night inc electric), and a C&CC THS a Rhayder for 4 nights (£7 per night). The rest were at wild spots.

Our biggest problem was emptying the cassette, as we can last about 4 -5 days with our water, but 3 days tops, and more like 2 with the cassette. We're too decrepit to take to the undergrowth with shovels!! Hopefully, now we have TWO cassettes, emptying won't be such a problem, but even with a Radar key we couldn't get in the loos at Clywedog reservoir as they were locked, - with a padlock on the Radar one!!

If we are away for a long time we also use C&CC sites fr getting the washing done, but this time round we were able to do it at Shell Island, and lasted out then til we got home. (JUST, in the case of my BH!!)

Our biggest expense was fuel!
 
i find french and english places compare quite reasonably,and welsh ones too,i don't pay for any of them and find this suits my pocket rather well.i drive along humming ''never have,never will,put my money in their till'' anyone care to add a few verses to make a slightly mental wildcamping anthem we can all sit round the fire chanting?

Over the last 20 days.
£170 Diesel.
7 nights at antique fairs (no hook up, but free toilets & water) (£200 stall fees, but thats business expense)

20 litres of water (4 x 5 litre) £1.09 each

approx £80 food, plus £80 beer

3 nights at home restocking etc..

ZERO CAMPSITES, CL's or P&D car parks.

so 10 nights in layby's/car parks, all but one suitable for the dog

Back home right now for a week, then I do it all over again
 
3 weeks in May 2012 touring France, Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, stayed 1 night on a campsite in Germany as it promised a riverside pitch and free wifi with fishing. cost 7€ and left the next day as band of nettles was 100 yards thick. back to the UK then a further week mootching around the south coast. total cost for sites, water, leccy, loo emptying 7€ and could have avoided that. Happy days.

I'm guessing you are travelling most days to charge up your batteries. Or maybe not. Do you know how much you use weekly on fuel?

Hmm now that's really interesting. Is it a universal key for all sanitation stations on the UK canals?

Hi Ste I've read and reread this and the one thing that jumps out at me is water. I'm guessing the 20 litres of bottled water was for drinking. What did you do for washing/showering?

Antique fairs (most are at huge showgrounds), (Plus the 3 nights i had at home to re stock). Motorway services/Truck stops provide good showers too.
 
8 weeks in Portugal fuel what ever it takes to get there, camp site noway water free, food catch some buy the rest. Drink a blinking lot,:banana::banana::banana:

We did 8 weeks and got back 2 days ago. We travelled from Portsmouth up the east side of the country as far as the Moray Firth, across and down the west side. Without checking probably £80 a week at 25 mpg. We did stay in some wildspots for 2 days and quite often only travelled 30 miles in a day.
 
we are just back from 2 weeks in scotland & did not use a camp site at all.
what we save on site fees we use on diesel so we can do extra miles & see more places.
