Hi there
Anyone got a safe overnight 'wild' south of Newcastle near the A!?
Regards
Alan

Depends how far south of Newcastle you want to be. I parked up at CR Whickham the other month about a mile from the Metro Centre on the A694 in Gateshead (look for Swalwell Cricket Club). Biggish carpark with walks around the river and not much traffic noise. A little further south is the Wingate Nature reserve car park just off the B1278. In the sticks and off the road.

Try the Fox and Hounds at Coalburns about 5 miles west of A1 at Gateshead Metro centre, real ale pub, only food on a sunday, you can park on the car park at the front of the pub. Take the Blaydon turn off the A1, then follow the Prudhoe road turn off for greenside, then take the chopwell road, pub is on your right 1 mile from greenside.

not quite as far south as Scotch Corner within 2 miles either side of junction 60 on the A689 there are laybys which are screened from the road mainly used by trucks and with early morning butty wagons setting up in some of them.

Sorry I got the distance wrong, but I see Scotch corrner as south of Newcastle, 1-2 miles is near,

So I will try harder,

... or, thinking about it, any of the Metro Centre car parks?

They lock them at night Mariesnowgoose. The last one locked is the Red Car Park. The car parks are not available unless the vehicle is broken down and cannot be recovered at night info from INTU Metrocentre.

Ah, right, I didn't know that.

Team Valley should be safe enough though, specially overnight when it would be pretty quiet.

At Thinford, on the A167 there is a layby beside the roundabout. MaccyD, pub etc, and quiet enough.

Is the metro centre asda 24hour? Just wondering whether the Ikea car park next to it would be accessible.

There'll be a few quiet spots in amongst the Washington Industrial Estates too.

But the nicest environment is prob the Swalwell/Derwent Walk area mentioned further up thread.

You're right, Scamper, Ikea car park is accessible 24 hours and I've seen quite a few campers parked up there the last few years.

Team Valley is right next to A1, Washington Industrial states are a little more of a detour - plus I still get lost round Washinton, a hangover from when they were numbered districts instead on place names! Town planners, ey, who'd have 'em?! :p :D

There will be loads of places to park up safely all around this area.

if you wantrd to be near the metro centre there is a small layby near cosco just a few hundred metres north of metro centre
should be quiet enough.
