hi, weve just come back from two weeks on the islands, had a great time but its becoming more dificult to find plases to camp'the tourist board are encouraging it but the locals are genraly not keen on us. so ther are mixed messages adout it.the few campsites are very basic and could be a lot better.we did enjoy our time there and spent our hard earned pennies on the islands, even buying tweed.the beaches are to die for and local shellfish defenatly a must, anyone going will enjoy it,but expect to drive about looking for spots to wild camp:)

The locals are generally welcoming if you respect the area and accept that it is a working area...I've just posted in another forum about a van parked across one of my gates yesterday preventing me letting out 90 sheep + lambs to fresh grazing....and don't get in the way if someone is in a hurry to get to work.
Campsites, if the commercial(CC. & C&C Club) ones are meant, are generally very good. Some private ones are indeed basic, but if you are self contained that shouldn't be too much of a problem if all you need is water and dumping facilities...after all, the season is relatively short for individuals to invest in major development.
As to "expect to drive around looking". Canalsman's Poi database shows how many places exist and, as to "drive around"....this is a fairly remote part of the world which is part of its charm. My local supermarket is a 52 mile round trip, to buy a stamp is 11 miles. We aren't in a big city up here!

Hi - are you sure it was LOCALS who were (Quote) generally not keen on us (End Quote) and not the odd incomer who thinks he/she own the place, I have been doing the Islands for 20 years, twice a year and never met a local who was being awkward. I have only received a couple of complaints regarding awkwardness and they were both incomers to the Islands. If you would like to send me an email: spinning_wheel@btinternet.com with more details as to why they were (Quote) generally not keen on us (End Quote) and where it was I will look into it.
