Next destination Croatia. Does anyone have any wild camping experience in Croatia? Do the authorities welcome motorhomes or is it caravan sites only? Any information greatly appreciated.

Hi

I haven't been to Croatia for about five years but when we were there the authorities were very much against wilding - especially along the coast. I would rate it as one of the most difficult countries in Europe to wild in - and the campsites are not cheap either. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but maybe others will know of bits of the country where it is possible.

Croatia is lovely but we've never wild camped there so not much help I'm afraid.

But if you travel a little further South into Montenegro there are plenty of spots to camp, especially up in the mountains, with spectacular views. Go before it gets too spoilt by tourism.

Generally hostile. We came through mainly on the coast road from Albania in late March and were informed that if we stayed into the evening we would be moved on. Away from the coast it is a bit easier and also into the northern bit that points into Serbia.

There were very few sites open and a lady at a tourist office agreed that the governments stance against wild camping was not helpful particularly away from the summer months.

Check your insurance for Montenegro as you also will need coverage in either Serbia or Bosnia as well to transit these countries. Fortunately our French insurance covers all these countries.

That said the Balkans generally have much to offer and we found people very welcoming and friendly.
