Every year in October Sue and I take off for a few days in the van up near Braemar in the Dee Valley to try to hear the “Roar of the Titans” - red deer stags bellowing to warn off other stags from poaching their harem!
This year was quite exceptional. Not only were we kept awake most of the night by the really eerie sounds of several stags bellowing away and echoing off the valley walls, but when I got up to make tea early one morning we were treated to the magnificent sight of some 34 hinds with 1 stag crossing the river no more than 20 yards from the motorhome.
Every overnight was at one of the wc POI’s near Braemar and we were at the POI in the attached photo when we saw the reds crossing just in front of us (unfortunately too dark to photograph). At this same POI we also saw red squirrels and hares.
Thankyou Phil and POI admin for all your hard work.
In addition on the way back home we stopped off at the Crathie bakery honesty box to pick up some bread and croissants and quite literally bumped into Camilla (Prince Charles wife). This is not unusual up here as this year alone we’ve seen her at the newly refurbished Ballater Station (well worth a visit if you’re in the area) and in the bike shop!
The whole trip was less than 80 miles round trip from our house - how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world.
