Ive got a new van with aerial and booster connected and it swivells round ontop of roof like a gooden. I live on top of a mountain - tried plugged in tv out - works fandabbbydozzy. Plus Ive got a built in tv on a monitor on dash works fab.
Been away twice now and tried every which way bar none and cannot get tv to work - neither one and its driving me mad - for gods sake its a new van. For an hour I turned the aerial inch by inch. up and down - well u get the jist - Please can someone tell what to do HELP

Jacky,
You don't say where you live or where you were when you couldn't get a signal. When we park on our drive in Rochdale we get a tv signal without even directing the aerial. When we go to a particular site near Gargrave in the Yorkshire Dales (which is exactly half way between the Winter Hill and Emley Moor transmitters) we can't get a tv signal at all. You need to get yourself a satelite dish girl!

You might need to buy a signal strength meter. Plug it in and turn the aerial until you get the strongest indication.

It sounds like you have the Status 530. it can also be swivelled to almost 90 degrees from the horizontal. Whenever you are close to your stopping point, check which way house aerials are pointing and if the aerial is horizontal or vertical. In the more remote locations, it is often a repeater transmitter which means your aerial would need to be in the vertical lane. A repeater also gives a weaker signal quite often.

Hi are you retuning the TV as most of the country is now Digital

suggest you look at where other TV aerials are pointing and point yours in that direction

then do a retune of your TV to get the local channels

you will need to retune the TV AT EVERY stopover unless you are in the same coverage
area which for a main transmitter could be upto 30 miles but a local relay will only be a few miles

hope this helps

regards Charlie

Hi,

If you can tell us where you live it would help.

Are you receiving analogue at home? most areas are now digital.

Go somewhere near a main transmitter, look at the houses nearby and point your antenna in the same direction, then do a retune of your TV.

If you are pointing at a repeater, most of them are verticaly polarised (antenna elements pointing up and down) again, looking at the locals helps.

As previously mentioned, you usually have to do a retune at every location.

I just use a set top antenna (5 element) and get signals most places, so your posh one should be great!!

I bought one of these last week, TV Aerial Signal Strength Meter, under a tenner off Ebay, just plug into TV ariel and move ariel to get the most led's to light up, try and get more than 2, then plug ariel into TV and retune.:goodluck: (it needs a 9v battery)

t.v.ariel

Its not the booster what is not switched on is it ,just a thought. You usually find it somewhere beneath where the ariel is mounted in a cupboard. Just a thought.

Thanks for all your replies. I live top of hills by Holywell North Wales and I went to Phiwelli and Aberstwyth. The booster was on. The aerial is built in through the units. Tried re-tuning and just kept on saying No Signal. I Do have a digital TV. If bought a device not sure where I would attach it to. I had Aerial up, down facing the same way as other aerials, I feel I am doomed to a life time of DVDs.

Hi,

If you still get probs and fancy a drive to Old Colwyn, I'll have a look for you

call me to talk 07979 508286

At home, Are you pointing to Winter Hill (Granada) where Channel 4 comes up at position 4 or Moel y Parc where S4C comes up on position 4? Both are now digital.

I presume that at the other locations a TV signal was received by others?

If you are unsure where the transmitters are in relation to your location try the site
Ofcom | Television Transmitter Location Maps

It shows all of the transmitters and gives details.

I have the same problem as you in my current location in south lakeland near Millom. The Status is just not powerfull enough even with the amp to get a usable signal. It works fine in other locations.

Tele probs

I know you don't want to hear this but the digital signals which now cover the country are very good, so quite why you are having the problems you are is a bit of a mystery.

All the advice so far is sound as a pound and it's hard to see what's stopping your tele working. Like John I live in South Cumbria on Walney island, and if I go out to the local beach I can pull in digital services from Winter Hill, The Green at Millom and North Wales. This is on a cheapo Comet tele connected to an old Phillips indoor aerial with a mickey mouse amplifier in the base of it. It also worked well on a recent trip to the Outer Hebrides, which is just as well because I left our satellite receiver at home by mistake.

I think you should take up the earlier offer of local help. Seems to me, if I can drag in services on a bit of wet string you should be having no problem with a whizzy set up like yours.

Good Luck!

why can't I get a signal?????????????

Just a thought, apart from retuning your set it would also be a good idea to retune to the factory setting as well. I asume your booster is compatable with your aerial.

Two TV points

In my van I have a drop down TV in front and an ariel socket at the back. Although difficult to see the "analogue" signal from the aerial was split prior to the digibox which works the front TV so it was only "digital" , via the box, on the drop down. ie no digital signal at the back. The solution was i) I initially moved the digibox to the back and fed lead from point to digibox to TV. Eureka -picture at back and wife happy.
This was messy as I had only 1 12v socket at the back so now ii) I have a digital TV with built in Freeview which works fine at the back and I reput the digibox to the front cabinet where it started.

Two TVs with independent digital reception (Ideal for footy season!!).

Hope this helps

Hi Winks

We have visit this site from time to time for a number of years.

I had another go last night with my Status 530 at its max height. The amplifier is on and set to high. The antenna is horizontal. TV is an Avtec with built in DVB tuner.

The set picked up 15 channels the first 7 of which were just a black screen that then displayed that it couldn't display the signal. Initialy these have some slight squarking sound, that is not even Norman Collier quality.

The remainder are very pixilated and freezing with both voice and vision breaking up.

My location is in the dunes behind the old Airfield at Millom. It am in a dip behind the seaward dunes and if I beam at Millom Park I get nothing on either vertical or horizontal. Turning more to the west on horizontal gets a signal from, I think, Barrow in Furness across the estuary.

The Antenna head and amplifier have been back to Grade UK, tested and found to be up to specification.

This is an improvement from pre switchover days when we got no signal at all.

With my set up I have found it to bee good in good signal areas but diminishes rapidly as the signal quality deteriorates slightly.

The last 2 remarks sounded very helpful but far far too complicated for me. I did get the DVD out and said my booster for tv aerial should be red - when I looked it was I think blue there was a switch on top which just switched it off - is there something that I should be pressing ?? I know what u r thinking im thick - correct im afraid

Hi 3Jacky

What make of amplifier are you using? (Make) What Antenna? (Make & Model)

My status amplifier just has one red power light which doesn't change colour.

As it's a new van, I'm guessing it's got a status antenna as they are very popular.

I notice that the amplifier has an attenuator, if so is it switched in the high position, great where you live but needs to be in the low position in less favourable locations.

If it is a Status, go to: Status 530 Directional Antenna (Short Mast) - Digital and Analogue reception

Where there are loads of images to help you define what you have, also instruction manuals, (I know, a last resort!!).

The offer is still there to come and have a day out in Old Colwyn, we use a low power repeater signal, so it'll be a good test.

Thanks - I will try what u suggest and if all fails I will be contacting u lol
