Hi All

Are any of you out in your Motorhomes? We are still on hols in the south of the UK since leaving the Yorkshire Dales on Dec 21. Been to Hayling Island, Isle of Wight, New Forest, through Dorest and along the south Devon Coast. Currently on a fab CL near Salcombe but it was a bit dodgy getting down the narrow lane in the snow to get here. Spent a fantastic night on the beach at Slapton Sands last night. Freezing but the stars were so clear.

I reckon we might be stuck here for a day or two and then we want to head north to Illfracombe. I think the coldest night was -12 and we were fine.

Any tips on the safest route thats not likely to be snow bound from Salcombe to Illfracombe in the next few days appreciated.

Let us know where you all are or are we the only idiots out there (in the UK anyway)

We live in the North Yorkshire Dales and the village is cut off so no point in going home anytime soon anyway!

Cheers

Nope some of us live full time in vans !!!

Albeit asking the hound the question why did we come back ?, When we could have gone to Spain or Portugal.

Congratulations, FWIW it always amuses me when the fair weather brigade make an entrance and extoll their 'expert' opinions of camping.!!

Lack of prescence tells me summat... Hot air and wishful thinking for starter.

Happy Camping and well done , in the true spirit of things !!

Well we concidered Portugal and Spain (I dont even like Spain) but no, its not for us anymore all this namby pampy sunshine and warm weather. Now we are hardened all weather campers I think it will be Iceland for us next year.

Yes I forgot about you full timers! You just assume they are somwhere warm but then why should you be.

Heres the spot we spend on Slapton Sands last night. We did get a slight ticking off from some official this morning but he was ok about it.

Good see the good old Kontiki holding its own in the english winter weather, yours down there and ours in Wales over xmas. Only problem we found was wind coming through the sliding window but a strip of tape solved that :)

Drive safe

Yeah ours has a few drafts around the fridge and cooker area, I think I need to go around with a screw driver and sealant but its not that noticible unless the winds really blowing. "Drive Safe" you say. Nearly came a cropper just now on the bike. We went all around Salcombe and the north and south bays and took it really easy down the ice and snow covered narrow roads back to the CL. got back to the CL and the track up to where the van is was covered in snow but as it was a hill I wound it on a bit and actually got the back end out which would be fine on a crosser or trail bike but on PIG with its little fat and frankly now slick tyres it was a bit of a brown trouser moment and I got a severe bollocking of Mrs D.

Hi

Im about 7 miles north of Richmond which is about 40 miles north of York. Loads of places where we are but Im not sure about anything close to York. There maybe a few places around the outlying villages but York is a nightmare for parking a car let alone a Motorhome. My advice would be to look for a CL or CS.

Cheers

We would but sadly the rangers have closed all the carparks, there are wild spots but the cool thing with the carparks is that they lock u in so you never get disturbed by the 12 finger locals ;)

We may take a drive over anyway and if there is anywhere sensible to park we will stay over :)

Oh theres always a smart arse "Proper" wild camper to make us look like we're in the Hilton by camping out in Outer Mongolia in a rabbit hutch while we sit in our coach builts with blown air heating and endless supplies of gas and ice cold beer!

Seriously though, how did you survive without heating in those temps?

I think ive been in tents (when I was younger) down to -2 and I remember being ok ish in my sleeping bag but my head was always freezing!

Great pics by the way. Look forward to seeing you in the next Milk Tray advert!

Cheers

haha! i wasnt trying to cause offence in my first post!! :D

the temp was fine, a good sleeping bag with duvet on top. turn the cooker on for 2 mins with doors and windows closed and van is toasty. same in the morning. ( i think i was so tired from snowboarding all day that i didnt notice - although the thick ice on inside of windscreen was a pain!)
I was very jealous of the motorhomes surrounding me though.....

I hope you had a gas alarm turned on.... ;) :D

Only joking, your most welcome regardless of what you drive, the point is you like to get out there is the real world....

You will soon get used to the school yard humor on here! And when your feeling Jealous of these great big fancy motorhomes just slip under a height barrier into your own private car park while they trundle around trying to find somewhere to park!

My snowboarding days are over (actually did they ever start?) so its good to hear about somebody getting out there and doing something adventurous.

Going to explore somemore of devon on the scooter in the snow later although strangely it only seems to be on the roads and not the fields, should be a laugh. Its a fantastic sunny morning and we havent had any more snow so should be ok.

Heres a pic of the van and CL took this morning.
