I am curious as to who drives the campervan or motorhome?
I tend to drive our 'van 99% of the time, but having only owned our 4 tonne beast since August last year, 'her indoors' has not had much chance to drive it.
I am ex military, so have driven large vehicles on the public highway, and to be honest was really not looking forward to my good lady taking a turn behind the wheel, however, today she drove the 'van from Sheffield to Grimsby without a problem, this involves exiting our narrow driveway and turning onto the main road, which requires using all of the highway to avoid smacking a tree or gate post with the overhang, driving through small villages (we had a detour off the main road) overtaking maneouvers and parking.
Although she did not want to take part in getting the 'van out of the drive, I persuaded her to do it and all went well.
I also ride bikes (as she does) and want to be able to take both bike and 'van perhaps on a trip sometime, and so I am relieved she has the confidence to drive our 7.5m long 'house'.
I may sound condescending, but it is not meant that way, it is just when you have paid over £30,000 for a vehicle you need to know that it can be driven safely.:D

So who drives your pride n joy??

Hi I have 7mtr sundance and my wife does not drive but my daughter uses my van and I do not worry about her driving at all and her own car is a mini.

I tend to drive most of the time but the wife has no problem driving it either here in the Uk or in Europe. She isn't keen on driving down some of the narrow lanes or in heavy traffic but it is more the fact that I am probably a nervous passenger .

Betty did her HGV licence conversion in our MCI motorhome - 40' long, turning circle of the Queen Mary, 17 ton tag axle, air brakes with a 4-speed manual spicer crash box - and it normally tows a small 4WD as well, so quite a handful.

If she can drive that, she can drive anything with 8 wheels.

Never-the-less, she prefers to sit in the co-pilot's seat enjoying the scenery

I generally drive as I rarely drink these days...

Me-John can't drive

My sister mostly drives theirs as she loves driving it.

Hi All,

Wife drove our small van once about two miles on a country road and has sworn never to do it again so me now. However she is happy to navigate me down single track Welsh "roads" with grass growing in the middle and complain that she needs to get to the shops in a hurry:D

We take turns - a couple of hours each if we're going a long way, or otherwise one drives there and the other drives back.

My wife drives the car from Mon: to Fri: I drive it over week-ends. But she will not drive the MH. So I have to long haul her there and back. As regards to navigating; I play my Country music soooo loud, so as I do not have to hear her giving me instructions. After 51 years driving , knowing the roads inside out and with the help of a Sat Nav and a map she still tells me where I should go. BLESS her heart. I could kill her sometimes ☺ (hope she doesn't read this, or I am a gonna.

I know where you are coming from, a sat nav is a lot cheaper than a divorce:D

Got our CI Autoroller 6wks ago and hubby yet to get behind the wheel!!! I'm more than happy jumping from my little punto into the MH and he's happy to let me. Just got a satnav which is driving me nuts tho as it keeps trying to get me on the blessed motorway.....sure i'll sort it out eventually:)

If you have a Garmin Sat Nav: 1) Switch on 2) press Tools 3) Press Settings 4) Press Navigation 5) Press Avoidances.
You will now have a list of what you want or don't want. Touch Motorways, a check mark will appear. That means you want to avoid Motorways. Then press OK. put a check on toll Roads too if you want to avoid paying tolls. Hope this helps.

Thank You - that helps alot - if only i was patient enough to read the manual - but i reckon it's called a MANual for a reason.......

Same here! I am the one with the car licence, Alan rides a motorbike and I leave that to him nowadays.
I would however like a turn at sitting in the back passenger seat relaxing with a cuppa admiring the scenery as we travel.

My wife drives our rig quiet well. Our van and 4WD Toyota landcruiser measures in around 35 feet and weighs in around 4 tonne. Some days we cover large distances say Adelaide to Melbourne which is 730 km which i think is about 500 miles so it really is handy to have her drive. We generally talk in hours driving and usually stick around 4 to 5 hours between parks or camp spots.

Oh Beema that's fighting talk to me !!!!!!!!!

We have 2 x LHD vehicles; one hubby uses here in the UK because he is into outdoor sports and likes the luxury of space and facilities. Obviously he drives this as his main car but I do drive it too sometimes.

The big one we take to Europe and I LOVE driving that one :) But don't get to do it often enough as 'him in doors' is a hog! Although he admits that I drive it very well (condescending so and so) when I do take a turn he is a pain in the arse. He gets easily bored as a passenger and starts fiddling with things or even getting up and walking around the van doing things. That drives me mad  Also I am a far better navigator than he is as I love maps. So I now settle for sitting in the navigators seat for the sake of peace of mind.

Seriously what I would say is that there is no reason whatsoever why females can't drive as well as males. But they do sometimes seem to lack the confidence to do so. But a word of caution - one friend of ours got injured when in Portugal a few years back and his wife never ever drove their van, although she was a competent car driver. It caused them no end of problems as they had to leave the van in Portugal and fly home. When he was recovered he had to return to Portugal simply to drive the van back! So the moral of this story is GUYS - let the ladies drive and stay current. You never know when it might be vital they can do so.

No No! I don't want a fight, you see I bruise easily....:D
My point was/is that perhaps, we don't allow our other halves to drive more often, and this can cause lack of driving experience.
However, I don't think learning to drive a 4 tonne, 7.5m vehicle with a 2m overhang, a clever thing to do on a public road!
I am now confident that my wife has had enough driving experience to take on the more busy roads.... that's my point..does that make sense?
I'll get my coat!
