I think Whitby town centre is pretty much a no go for overnighting. Best go up on the moors then come back to town during the day. I have stayed on the carpark near the co_op, but that has been out of season.

My nieghbours stayed on the car park last bank holiday and they said they never got bothered or told to move on and they have quite a big MH!

I was up that way 10 ish days ago a couple of vans in the co op car park, and a couple at Blue bank. I wasn't in the motorhome, but a few spots still, as suggested visiting during the day is perhaps best bet. Couple of vans parked up also on the Harwood Dale road

we visit whitby quite a lot , its not that far from us ,and we see quite a few vans parked during the day , plenty of places if you get there nice and early . but my advice would be leave and travel a few miles out on the a171 either way i belive it is and you will find plenty of suitable overnighting places ,one i se with some wagons in and well set back from the road is at stainsacer lane opposit sainsburies ,looks an ideal spot ,on i would definately use if i needed an overnight place Sainsbury's, Whitby - Stainsacre Lane Opening times picy of it here if it works ,you can zoom in for a closer look .one of many within a reasonable distance ,saves all the hassle of risking been moved on or told you cannot park in town ,if your willing to look round

There will be lots of vans around, as it's Whitby Folk Week. See what the others are doing.

I mentioned earlier that my neighbours stayed at Whitby they where on the car park opposite the co-op I'm sure they said there was no signs about overnight camping as he said they said a couple of nights!

mabey it is ok to stay a night if there's not that many about , i have stayed many a time on car parks that have had these no camping /sleeping notices up all over and never been told by anybody to move .i suppose its when you get a dozen or so vans parked up people start asking questions . my rule of thumb was always if its quiet and largely unoccupied then i will stay one night , but if its busy there's always something a little further on . ive found there is little in the way of authority around at night except the cops and there largely too busy with other things to worry about a camper van parked up out of the way in a darkened corner . its the ones that decide it would be a good idea to spend a weeks holls in one place that are the bug bear .

I agree with that, there is an element of the herding instinct in a lot of wild camping spots,I've been on my own in a large parking area when another van has arrived and parked next to me.If motorhomers are discreet and just stop for a night in an out of the way spot I don't think anyone would bother you.The rules are there to be enforced just in case a group arrive and park up indiscriminately, then the police can merely point to the signs.
