Which aire for xmas

MORE HELP PLEASE FOR OUR FIRST TRIP.

We are currently planning our first trip through France to Spain and with our best laid plans of Mice & men, we intend to be heading into France around the 22nd Dec'. As we are unable to get hold of a copy of the Aires (new Print due in March 2011), I have no idea where we can set down for a few days over Xmas that will be within an easy (day or two) drive. Ideally, somewhere not too far off our route through to Spain and right on the edge of a town. Anyone been to Le mans?

Any suggestions, first night stop overs and pointers, as always, will be gratefully received.

Regards Poco Loco:)

hello there ? driven through le mans when i was heading to spain last year but i was in the car at the time ? so i didnt stop at any of the aires ? but there where plenty of nice places , anyway i made a wrong turn on to a toll road and they had some great looking aires everything that you need ?????? but i belive that the aires on the toll roads are were you get robbed ???? dont take my word for that ? other people on here will no more than me so they will probly post replys ? dnt let that put you off though france was made for motorhoming ? enjoy yourselfs anyway will be in the mountains myself skiing in january ? thanks dogmanlpool

If you can't get hold of the Aires book yet, try the website CAMPINGCAR-INFOS - it is all in French but easy to understand and contains information on all the aires throughout France and over much of the rest of Europe, including Spain.

Happy travels - and, as far as the dangers of being robbed are concerned, if you avoid the motorway aires and stick to the aires de camping car you will be as safe as anywhere.

Thanks for the reply. One of our options is to try and do a bit of skiing on route back. Where are can you suggest with an Aire / Campsite near by?

Water

If you are rushing down on the main RN roads or the Peage roads you possibly won't see many Aire's except for the truck & car type which are not the safest as mentioned above.
You will need to go off the main roads. You could always overnight in most small villages and you will be safe enough.
One important thing though. You may find that the water taps have been disconnected due to possible freezing conditions. You should be able to get water from most service stations or possibly some of the larger main route Aire's.
Take a look at the thread "A few French Aire's" you may find some on your route and you could take a note.

Cheers *****, we intend to avoid the tolls where possible. We have about 2 weeks to make it to Spain so no rush, unless we get fed up with the weather? I am a bit cautious of where to overnight on our first trip so, as you suggest we will probably end up in villages or on site I think. When you talk about water from services, I take it you mean from a tap and not bottled? Having problems with my Kidneys, I'm not too keen on drinking water from unknown sources or that has sat in a plastic tank with god knows what else. Is the water from the services "Potable"? What do you use to ensure your holding tank is clean enough for drinking?

Hello
There are 2 copies of the current All the Aires of France on ebay at the moment.
When you drive around France you will come across loads that are not in the book.
We spent 5 months in mainland Europe this year and never buy bottled water. Never found it any different to water from our tap at home.
Cheers

Note that the "All the Aires" book is not the same as the "Guide Officiel" which is sold in France and published every March. It is in English but in my opinion it is nowhere near as accurate as the French one. We always go for the French one when we return to England in the spring after over-wintering in the warm. Happy travels.
