IF ?
if you had to be somewhere that you have been on your travels ,where would it be,
is there somewhere that you have been that you would like to settle down in ,and why ,
or do you have a place that you cant resist returning to ,somewhere that keeps drawing you back
is it the people ?
is it the place ?
is it the climate ?

It's certainly not the climate....nor the people (there aren't any) but the place....the most beautiful, remote, peaceful place that I've ever been to.
The Bothy at Kearvaig near Cape Wrath....would love to live there. Just making the 40 mile round trip to Durness or Inverkirkaig once a fortnight to stock up on supplies.

Wow! That's a question and a half - basically I don't want to settle down anywhere (which is why I spend most of the year travelling in my motorhome!). But the best single trip I ever had has to be Antarctica (not in the van!). As to the place I keep returning to, that has to be either Egypt or the Almeria region of south-eastern Spain - in both cases because of the attitude to life which values people above systems or income. In both cases, the winter climate is good, which is why I know them so well, but that is not the main reason why I feel so at home there - in the end it comes down to people. In the Arab world (and I regard Almeria as part of that because of its Arab past) you are judged as an individual not as part of a group. The irony is that many Brits think all Arabs are terrorists but most Arabs don't blame us for the attitudes of our government! If I had to choose one continent to spend the rest of my life in it would be Africa because of the civilised nature of the Arab north (and I don't mean the governments!) and the wonderful and laid back attitude of the people south of the Sahara. But really I'd prefer to keep moving.

E Germany for me, esp Dresden, love that city and wish i still lived there!

a place in corwall with the coastal footpath far enough away down a cornish b road (that the ones with grass up the middle) that goes nowhere so no shortcut to anywhere

Durness and the northern Scottish coastline.

But, given a choice, I wouldn't settle anywhere but full-time in a small stealth-van and enjoy the freedom of moving from place to place.

Goa, India. It used to be a Portugese Colony before India attached it and took it over. The people a staunch Catholics and they all speak English to a point. Goa is one long beach on the East coast which is right up my street. The Climate is a steady 23º in winter and a great 30º in Summer. Most, if not all of Goa is surrounded my Coconut and Banana trees. Their life style is much like Spain but even more laid back. Very friendly folks and you are treated like royalty when invited into their home.

Until the last decade, my travelling had been limited to the UK, so my choice is perhaps more limited than some. I have only been MHing for a year.

Norway would be high on my list for its scenery, but I have never wintered there, so I am a bit wary of that.

Easiest place to live in for me would be mid and south France.

Ask me again in a couple of years.

Nicest place I ever went was Scalpay, a little island off Harris in the Western Isles. The people there were so friendly, the island was so beautiful (all those wild flowers and birds) and being June it stayed light nearly all the time. The climate wasn't so wonderful though! Like living on the deck of a ship.

If I had to settle down for a while in one place it would be North Eastern Corfu. Now Im not talking about the tat resorts that Thomas Cook send the great unwashed to but the section of the island associated with Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals. We have spent a lot of time there and its just stunning. The Corfu Channel over to Albania is one the most beautiful stretches of water to potter around in a boat in with some of the best Restaurants in Greece just a jetty away.

Having said that I want to full time in the van for a while so pretty much anywhere in France below the Loire Valley and or anywhere in Europe where its warm enough to wear shorts all the time.
