this year we're planning a little tour of scotland during my two weeks off in august... with my two teenage girls - we know we want to go to the moray firth to see dolphins, and thinking of spending a couple of days at loch ness, and most prob a day goldpanning somewere.... we're going to set off up the east coast, criss cross in and out a bit then set back via the west coast doing the same...

anybody got any 'must not miss' places of interest? no where too busy though! apart from being near inverness we hope to avoid the cities!!:D

the teenagers aren't really into wilding so we'll mostly be using campsites or pub carparks :(

Hi,
hope you manage to see the Dolphins, a great show, also if your going anywhere near Durness, visit the info centre and they will tell you where to find the Puffin colonay, they are a nice little walk across the beach and cliffs, take a picnic and observe some of the antics, love them.
A visit to view the scenery at Wester Ross and stay on the common land at Sheldaig overlooking the sea, sticks out from my last visit.
Lots to see and so little time, but I'm sure you will go back.
Have a great trip, we are also in Scotland july/aug, give us a wave.

Happy Camping:)

puffins sound good! looking into whale watching trips, but the price is a bit steep!

Why not take in a trip to John O Groats where you can do a day trip to the Orkney for a few quid..well worth it. The campsite is right next to where the passenger ferry is.

You really must take a drive through Glencoe it is a wonderful sight. I also agree about the Dolphins..go to Channory point at Rosemarkie or you can sit in your van at the CC&C site along the road and see some but the shows they put on at the point are great to watch especially when the lone seal comes along and noone bothers about him!!!

scotland

Go were ever you fancy, it is so nice and free and easy.Isle of skye very nice, recommend the falkirk wheel.brillant piece of engineering and a nice day out .Plenty of parking. room.

inverness

try the Bught Park leisure centre in inverness, handy if you need a good scrub. i payed £6 for a day ticket and you have sauna , spa, pool, etc . especially good if its a dreich day. not that it ever rains in the highlands. enjoy

Fab campsite in glenco, i think it was £10 the night for us last year take some wood to burn as fires are allowed and help keep midges away, a swimming hole is on site in the river along with loos and showers. A 10 minute walk through the best scenery ends up at a lovely pub. If you need to stay on a site the best i have been to for natural.

Yup agree, we went to Channonry point and stayed at rosemarkie site, we saw plenty of Dolphins. At the basic site at John o'groats we did take a ferry and saw porpoise.
The camping and cc site at Loch Lomond was lovely - shame we didn't have more time to stay.

thanks for all the ideas :) ... very much looking forward to the dolphins!:D

On your way back down there's a nice site in Ullapool. You are right on the shore and also close to the town.

Try the Breamar area, wide open areas with plenty of wildcamping or some of the empty glens to the west of Fort William such as Loch Quioch area.

FINDOCHORTY near buckie to see dolphins good cheap cc&c site there good pub to no midges on east side

c&c club site at dundee is nice it is near scoon castle and by the side of the racecourse

I think the CC&C site that t&s mentions is actually at or very near to Perth about 20 miles from Dundee!!!

west coast

hi there, if your going to the west try going to applecross, not much there but the scenery is outstanding there's a good campsite pub ect and you can allways say you;ve driven over the highest road in britain (2000 ft)to get there cheers!

Applecoss

Been there on the motorbike... absolutely terrific!!!

If you have BBC I-player you can watch a recent (and current) programme based there, its been on sunday evenings and its called Monty Hall's great escape but i can only say the views are breathtaking!!!

hope me little van makes it that high:eek::eek:

plans are comming on, decided to put in all the extra hours i can at work, which means the girls will be able to go pony trekking, canoeing, still debating over a whale watching cruise

at least i've managed to talk them into wild camping for a couple of days at a time, if only so they can spend the money saved on enjoying themselves!:D:D

You can get to Applecross without doing the 'pass of the cattle' by doing the coastal road from the Kinlochewe end but you'll miss the breathtaking views from the top:rolleyes:
