We always fill up our water carriers and take a few large bottles of water with us .. Always take a full flask of hot water too so we can have a cuppa as soon as we get there :D

I became obsessed with getting water when we first started wild camping in Spain some years ago, it was ridiculous as water was available everywhere, but I had to keep my tank full and all the 5 litre bottles I had,. had to be full. I'm over that now and water is easy to get on beaches, from the cold shower facilities, it's town water so is OK for the tank, we buy bottled water to drink neat and only costs pennies, cemeteries are a good source as are mountain fuentes and I have seen vanners catching the run off from their vans on rainy days, try petrol stations, public toilets ,desert wells, car washes usually have taps, I always ask before taking water as someone has to pay for it somewhere.

As others have said also marina's have taps all along the side so the boats can fill up with water.

we go away for 6months at a time so like the rest have taken water from all sorts of places . and yes even in the desert water is allways close its just finding it. it is marked on michelin maps .water out of a desert hole is so sweet you find the cover there is a tin on a bit of string and off you go .never take too much .cover the hole and mark it. possibly /usually someone as left some palm leavesto dry for you to use for fire. cut some down for next person and carry on. its a hard life being a traveller. you want cous cous, or tagine. inshallah. alibaba.

when travelling before u fill up with fuel ask at garage if u can fill up with water as well. if u cant find water buy it for less than 10 euros u can fill your tank its still cheaper than going on a campsite .also ask a local for the cost of a bottle of wine they will usually let u use theirs or direct u to where u can get some and u could make a new friend. :)

In this country we always ask at garages (if you buy something they never refuse - and you can also empty your toilet casette at the same time). In France, there is the extensive "Aire" network (also in Spain and other countries but less extensive). On the Med there are often beach showers and in countries such as Portugal and Greece there are fresh water taps in almost every village (just ask the locals). We have even asked private house-owners who we have seen watering their gardens (but not in England!). Once, on Orkney, the campsite was full but the owner allowed us to use the water and waste facilities free of charge - and even told us the best places to wildcamp (we used his facilities twice during our stay). Alternatively, a regime of three nights off site followed by a night on a campsite followed by three nights off site etc means you can go on forever but only pay for camping once a week (when doing this we also tend to use the washing machines on site while we are there). Happy travels.

I must be unlucky or something because when I bought a water carrier (15l I think) I asked the camping shop owner if I could fill it from his tap. He said no! Well, I won`t be going to Widnes Caravan centre any more. Id spent quite a few hundred quid over the years with them too.

We always carry a watering can, its easy to fill up from a stream that looks clean enough to wash in. In Norway I bought a funnel and stuffed it into the end of our hose and then held it under a waterfall until I got frostbite.

Watering cans are handy for taps without hose connections as well - plenty of small villages in Europe still have water troughs with a tap constantly running, somewhere in E Anglia I used an old village pump as well.
