Where did YOU park your wagon last night... ?

Hi All (and please excuse the unsolicited whiff of diesel), but I just wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate Canalsman on an absolutely sterling piece of work. His POI database is an outstanding tool for anyone who intends spending nights away from 'home' and I now have it loaded into Autoroute 2010 (which I use extensively in my job).

Bigpeetee started a thread asking for 'local knowledge' of sites and I thought that it might be an interesting excercise to try to tap into the knowledge base of the Professional Driving fraternity on here.

Like the majority of long-distance drivers I tend to avoid Motorway Service areas like the plague, preferring instead to search out quieter, more secluded, stopover points (such as bits of by-passed 'old' road and the like), and, with this in mind, it has occurred to me that - whilst not exactly embracing the full ethos of 'Wilding' - some of these places would serve as secure, hassle-free, overnight stops for anyone 'on the move' who does not want to/cannot book into a site in the near vicinity.

At this point I feel that I should declare a teensy-weensy interest ... in BEER. The reasoning behind this is that (through our collective input), Canalsman's POI database becomes SO successful that it goes commercial; He makes zillions of quids; Rents Scotland for a Weekend WildMeet and treats us ALL to BEER!!!
[All in favour - raise their right hand?.... Motion Carried!!]

So ... to my original question. For any Pro Drivers out there - current or retired - WHERE are/were YOUR favourite night-out spots located?

My favourite is already in database as POI, but its Drumochter Pass on the A9. I'm ex WVM and did a weekly run to Highlands from NW England. Used to do my last drop around 7 in Inverness, pop into Morrison's or Tesco for food, then head south for the layby. Well off the road, no telephone signal, no street lights. Brilliant. And probably like a lot of ex drivers, the sound of a truck passing, or even the sleeper train, doesn't bother me one bit.

as long as when he rents scotland, he evicts the midges

Am always bothered with midges and they affect me so much that if bitten on my legs the legs swell to twice there proper size. Last year in Wales an old farmer I told this to and asked how he managed said:" We get immune to them but if you want a tip watch the sheep on the mountain. If the sheep go high then there are going to be midges in the morning. It is true. I tried it out. If the sheep are high on the mountain I camp high. If they are low I campo low. Haven't been bitten this year yet. Touch wood
