What is it with Blackpool ???

The memsahib and myself have just had attempted to have a couple of days in Blackpool... and ... Aaaargh!!!! Why have we ('vanner's) become the 'Great Unwanted' I wonder? Parking restrictions are now SO draconian that it would appear that the only way to visit this place would be on a bicycle made for two (provided that you don't overhang your bay and, Heaven forfend, try to sleep overnight in the handlebar basket) !!!!!!!!

After a long and fruitless search for a car park space that would accomodate our T25 we finally gave up and spent Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday parked on the Old Prom near the Norbreck Castle along with countless other kindred spirits.

[Could have swore that we clocked Yorkshire Tyke on our first pass]

Is it beyond the imagination of the 'powers that be' to realise that, were they to designate an area on the South end of the prom as an 'overnight motorhome only', then they would not only generate a substantial amount of parking revenue but also benefit from people actually spending cash in the local vicinity?

As it was, we plumped for fish and chips and a carry-out from Asda at Fleetwood and then spent a gloriously relaxed 24 hours soaking up the sun and contributing absolutely Zilch to Blackpools' Tourist Revenue.

Ho Hum ....

To be honest i dont think the centre of blackpool would be on my list of places to stay in the 1st place, it's bad enough in a hotel. The state and mentallity of some of blackpools visitors dont make it one of the safest places to stay. I know a coach firm that parked there to find that the next day every window on the coach had been smashed.

hi vee tub ,i'twas i the good lady:rockroll: parked up at clevleys on the saturday night we had a vw parked at front and back of us:scared: we spent thursday and friday nite in whitehaven but woke up to bad weather saturday so de-camped down to blackpool, spent sunday on the boating lake in lytham st annes and last night on the sea front near the sand dunes
got a parking ticket in blackpool last year :rolleyes2: won't go in again:sad:

Blackpool has a terrible reputation when it comes to parking for ANY vehicle They'll even ignore the law when designating an area for restricted parking The jobsworths seem intent on driving visitors away

I work to a general principle of anywhere that doesn't want me and my MH, then I don't want to go there either.

It helps that I am not a fan of touristy attractions or big cities. I do sometimes make exceptions - Pisa and Rome...oh, and Nancy - but they were actually good as regards MHs.

But you are right - in England, caravans and MHs are often viewed with contempt. Short sited, really. At the moment I am in an aire in a nothing town village in Lorraine, free services, there are currently 8 of us parked here...and I sure most of us will be spending in the shops and restaurants.

Hi there O Venerable One ... We weren't the ones parked either side of you. By the time we came back from Fleetwood you had de-camped and done a runner. Was it the thought of being surrounded by THREE VW's that scared you off ?? :lol-053:

Blackpool has a terrible reputation for everything in my book. bad food bad drinking holes. bad parking, loud people, drunken yobs, screaming kids who are bored to tears 'cause their parents are too busy playing no win bingo to look after them. need I go on?:mad1:

you guys really arent selling Blackpool well! I havent been there in years but my son (almost 8) is very keen to go so I will be on the hunt for some nearby wild overnight spot myself in the next few weeks if anyone would like to share a good one!

I agree. Why would anyone visit Blackpool? Tacky, dirty, expensive, anti motorist, full of drunks. It's hard to drive along the prom without someone falling in to the road in front of you. I used to be a regular visitor but I'm in no hurry to go back.

Hi Marcs ... and sorry about the general dissing of the place. The memsahib and I followed Old_Arthurs tip and parked up at Cleveleys.

Head north from Blackpool prom towards Fleetwood. Just past the Norbreck Castle Hotel is a set of traffic lights. Turn left and drop down onto the Old Prom road. BLISS!!! No hassle and NO parking tickets.

Just a word of caution though ... If you drive a VW then DON'T park anywhere near a Van with 'Yorkshire Tyke' emblazoned on it. :lol-049: Seems that he has a thing about being surrounded ....

Oh Polly... Si vous essayez de me rendre envieux alors vous avez réussi. Je dois retourner pour travailler demain pendant que vous êtes dans un si magnifique endroit. Apprécier.

David.

Dear Venerable One .... [Just a thought] If you were floating round the boating lake and then got lost in the dunes then isn't it time that you re-calibrated your Navigator?

Everyone would do well to avoid central/south Blackpool as its not really a nice place to visit anymore. However to the north of Glynn Square all the way to Rossall is pretty OK for a stroll along the Promenade.

If you want the seaside on the Fylde coast then St Annes and Lytham are still pretty decent places to visit.

Thanks VeeDub, I should be safe im in a mitusbishi delica! ....

Hmmmm .... :raofl: Strange that you should should mention that one. My navigator often tells me that I have passed it and asks me to do a U Turn ... At Our age are we probably following the same Road Map ????? :sleep-027:

p.s. Sorry about the invasion of the VeeDubs (fore and aft that you described) ... but SOMEONE has to create a topic of interest - if only on a score of none to one!!???? Put it this way ... We are simply practising for a Grander Lifestyle.
