OK What are the real bug-bears that Councils up and down the Country have about us ? why are we so unwelcome ????
:rulez:

1/ Parking at night on one of 'their' roads, yet cars, vans and lorries, the latter 2 often bieng bigger and uglier than our motorhomes are OK ....

2/ Sleeping in our motorhomes parked in one of 'their. roads...can't understand that one....

3/ Do we use the local hedges to go to the toilet ?, Of course not but do the councils think so ?? probably yes.....

4/ Do we leave loads of rubbish behind ? No, but do the councils think so ? probably yes.....

5/ Do we make a noise and annoy local residents ? No, do the councils think so ? probably yes....

6/ Do we obstruct 'their' highway ? no... do the councils think we do....probably yes, but what about cars, vans and lorries ?? they are OK..

7/ Do we spend money in 'their' shops ? maybe, so do the people who park their cars, vans and lorries ? maybe...where's the difference ?.

....................... And here's the big one.................

8/Do they think we are Pikies ? :ninja: and that we are going to steal metal out of front gardens and leave the burnt out shell of a van filled with rubbish on 'their' roads ??????........... Yes of course they do.....

It's OK branding someone a nasty person if they are, but are we really nasty people ???? ... .........Ask the Councils.......:wave:

Probably what distinguishes (some) motorhome use from all the other uses you've quoted is that a motorhome could be parked for days, weeks, or even months without moving. I know cars and lorries can too, but they are very much less likely to.

Effective public parking on some roads depends on a constant turnover of spaces so people coming in can find a free space. It's this abuse by long term parking along seafronts etc by certain people that has got some residents and thus councils dead against motorhome parking.

As in everything else, its the minority that mess it up for the rest of us. People always remember the worst things, rather than the best - a bit like the worst kid in the class gets all the attention.

Towns/residents always expect the worst case scenario - i.e. one camper van parks up gets all the kit out, leaves rubbish etc, so it is expected that All motorhomers will do the same .

I saw an interview printed in the local press with one retired motorhomer who had been permanently taking up parking spaces along the sea front in Cornwall and hadn't moved for six weeks. When asked why he was there for so long, his answer was "because he could". And he was jolly well going to "enjoy the view while he was there!"

Come on how Meany motor homes park for long periods, most wont a place to park over night when the car parks are empty. If we wish to stop over in the day time and go into the town and spend money, then we put money into the pay and display. This thing with councils in this country is beyond belief, when you are in a lot of other countries you are encouraged to stop park and there for spend money. Is it all about rip of Briton as i would think people who come over here in there motor homes, if they get of at dover and say go on the A2 to Ashford services to park its £26 M25 Clacket lane last i was there £18. So we are not encouraging people to come to england, and our councils are encouraging us to go abroad. Some thing is very wrong. When will all this stupidity stop, is it people in local government trying to justify there jobs by producing more and more signs, why don't they ask the local trades people what they think, if they say they do not wont motor homes in there town so be it and we will go to where we are welcome

One of the things that doesn't seem to get a mention is all the cars that are 'parked up' with for sale sighns on them.
Some of them are there for weeks at a time - and when they do eventially go are then replaced.
I can't recall the councils or residents having a problem with these.

It only tends to take a few people abusing the parking for complaints to be made. And then the councils tend to act as they are there to represent the views of the community as well as balancing the use of the area by tourists and locals.

I don't think councils hate motorhomes, but they do have to act on the views of the community. Most council officers will tell you they are in for a quiet life and wont act unless complaint(s) are made.

Have you ever met a local councillor who actually knew what local people want and was prepared to represent them? Maybe BEFORE the election, but not after.

It is my theory that anyone who gets elected to public office, whether locally or nationally, secretly undergoes a lobotomy. How else can you explain the absolutely ridiculous rules and regulations that come out of town and county halls and parliament!!!

I drove past a motorhome on an Housing Estate the other day and the owner was letting his waste water go into a Storm Drain, if I saw this so did the local residents , so is it any wonder we are not welcome? Locals would probably think it was his toilet he was emptying.

there must be a limit to this self effacement, and a point where a mh owner might say he's exercising his rights despite the unreasonable prejudices of onlookers.i don't find it offensive if someone has a couple of chairs out,or their washing on a nearby tree,we all have to wash our clothes!or are we projecting our own feelings and fears?when i first went to france i saw respectable women go behind a bit of shrubbery and unselfconciously have a wee,men of course went anywhere, slightly discreetly.why would it bother anyone? but i knew you daren't do these things in gb,you'd be arrested

" but it does seem that the UK is a nation of NIMBYs and whingers. In one of the public car parks, right by the River Blavet in Pontivy town centre in France, a motor home has been parked for many weeks. I imagine that the owner is working in the area and finds it a convenient place to live. There are no signs of anyone trying to move him on, despite the Gendarme HQ being just round the corner. He is not bothering anyone and may well have the permission of the Maire. The principal of "live and let live" seems to apply more here."

I entirely agree with your sentiments here.

and,

"Of course, if a large group of so called "travellers" were to turn up and stay for any length of time, they would quite simply be told to leave. And they would do so. "

On what grounds, may I ask?

Possibly inappropriate and inconsiderate parking. A line of large motorhomes parked along a towns sea front or parked directly in front of local B&B's for several days and nights wont help gain many friends.
Leaving household rubbish behind when finally moving on, emptying toilet cassettes where they shouldn't be emptied, using generators and quite simply just being there, being an eyesore.

Playing fiddles late at night, selling lucky heather, stealing horses and putting curses on people when they refuse to buy pegs doesn't help either:D

On a serious note I think the smaller VW type campervans are more readily accepted rather than the large white motorhomes. Perhaps the images of the 60's hippy lifestyle, or the surfing youth culture has a lot to do with it plus the small footprint of these vehicles makes these vans less objectionable.

We stoped at at St. Laurent-du-var in southern France the sign said max stay 7 days, the site held 9 vans, we stayed 2 nights and in that time a lot of vans wonted to use the site but no room. We went back in 4 months later only to find 4 of the vans were the ones that were there on a our last trip. Now i think that is taking the p... and they should wave been moved on, so the french government do not seem to move vans on.

I get it now

I have recently moved into my MH, trial run, until then i could never get why people where so anti MH's parked in "their" street.

My daughter lives in a little village, there is a community centre where MH's park on occasions, usually when the dog show is on, the first night on my van i parked at my daughters, outside her house but across from the community centre, about 10.30 i heard loads of barking which after about 1/2 hour i went to look, i saw a woman in the car park allowing her dogs to bark persistently, i left it for a while but by 12.30 they were still at it, i had no choice but to go over, i was polite, she said they need to get rid of their excess energy, i suggested could she not take them for a walk, she said she couldn't walk far, i told her that it wasn't fair for the neighbours to have to listen to that racket at what now was 12.45 she shrugged her shoulders and carried on.

I went to bed with the radio on to drown out the noise. The next morning, 7 ish i walked down to the park, passed her van, to witness her emptying the toilet on the grass, :scared: her response was, "the community centre doesn't provide facilities for me so i have no choice", i'm not going to go into detail what i said but now i get it, i understand why we are looked upon as scum in some area's.

Now the neighbours have complained to the council asking for MH's to be banned from parking in the community centre which is a real shame because its a nice little spot,

and it is the case of one bad apple, but what can you do with people like that,

As for gypsies, i know quiet a few traveller sites and as they have been settled there for a while and accepted by the community around them there are no issues, and contribute to the community, i don't see what the problem is with travellers, and its not lucky heather, its lavender, which is aid to help you sleep, unless its changed since i used to make them with my grandma, who by the way was a Romani Gypsy

It's all about control.

Whether its government , councils , churches, advertising...there seems to be an inherent need to control.

Again people mention the gypsy traveller thing . Prejudiced opinions and then bleating about other sections of the community prehudicing them.

hi .over recent years there as been several caravans parked up in corners of fields round here . all illegal really . have thought about doing it myself . its a risk .you can getr moved on . also you then have land you cant use for much else but cant sell. but it does go on . i see more all the time . i do wonder if the local councils are getting soft or will they have a big purge soon .
they used to be much firmer and not allow it .
but really uk isnt hard to find a place for a night or two . sensible parking with thought of others never fails .
possibly the bigger the town/city the easier it is . in the country every one knows everybody so soon spot strangers .
france is fortunate it as more space than uk .

but agricultural land is far cheaper . after all its only land . i know of an old pig farm not really worth twenty grand . i know the owner its been unused for years .20 is not real possibly 5 is more like it .but get planning and 250grand would possibly not buy it .
i have thought of just parking up .live in the trailer . slowly lift the roof of one building .dry line it and use the rest as sheds etc . but is it worth it . ?
hard to say . would release capital . but as it wouldnt be official be a ******* if told to move in a few years time .
possibly i should have bought in brittany years ago. but not really sure i would have been happy there . like it here .
uk isnt in the **** ,just alot of unhappy people that will never be happy or make the right decisions . i think its never been better . seems most have a very high standard of living . more clothes shoes than they will ever wear out .cars etc but still moan .
just smile at them it makes them even more miserable .ha ha .

Would there be a housing shortage if we didn't allow up to 300,000 immigrants a year? And would the NHS still be under such pressure?
