Just got back from a long weekend in shropshire,Even with electric hookup and a 500watt heater running the water was all frozen ,The gas bottles froze even the dogs water froze inside the motorhome. Then this morning the van would not start after checking the battery i found the starter motor was frozen i put the wifes hairdryer on it for 10 mins and then it turned over but still would not start so i had to warm the diesel filter up and then it started. It was Minus 13 in the night so ive heard ,i had seen enough by this morning so i came home ROLL ON SUMMER

hi jellybean not much fun in england this time of the year filling water tanks emptying water tanks trying to keep warm keep a eye on the weather before you go this time of the year Spain is the places . happy camping

We had the w/e at Priory View campsite in Ulverston, for the Dickensian Xmas markets.
Saturday night was -9 C at 10.30 pm.
We were on hook up, and I left the 1000w oil rad on for the entire w/e.
In the garage I left on a 100w tube heater and positioned it close to the 'hole' which allows fresh water, waste water, and the blown warm air duct access to the false floor in my Hymer.
Everything in the van worked as it should, but the water system on the site froze !
Luckily we 'd filled up on arrival on Friday.
Got home Sunday pm and dropped all the water. I also opened all the taps and tried to get rid of any water left in the pump. I've left the taps open and isolated the 12 v system.
We're off to Spain 2nd week in Jan, 'till end of March. Hope it's better than last Winter !

We are glad we made the decision to come to Spain this winter. We arrived at El Portus near Caregena on 25th November. It was a glorious day 18.5c. Next morning it was raining and continued all day. Yesterday was fine again so we got the Safari Room up.

Woke up this morning to rain again. It feels cold at 7.6c but its better than minus 7.6c

At home in County Durham it sounds horrendous. I had an email from a friend giving me the latest conditions.

It seems a lot of us have escaped the weather by coming to Spain - just to say that here in Almeria the weather seems to be mirroring that in Cartegena that John Thompson describes. Wet today but since we arrived on 1st November we have had three or four bad days (by local standards!) and the rest has been absolutely glorious. It is forecast to stay wet until Wednesday, then back to normal for these parts. But we like looking at the snow scenes from a distance when we skype our daughter in Derbyshire!

Back in 1993 I used to fulltime in my first wildcamping van (a self built transit). I remember one night it got so cold I woke up because my face hurt so much. I could not open the doors of the van as they were frozen up and the engine would not turn over. We put on the gas fire (a free standing one) and slept in shifts as I would not sleep with the fire unguarded. We decided to stop with my parents because the weather was bad and ended up giving up fulltiming :(

Some 41 winters ago at the end of March. we went off on honeymoon in our split screen VW camper. We headed off down south, and ended up at the Isle of White, in frosty cold semi snowy conditions. Everywhere we went people asked if we were enjoying our honeymoon. "How do you know we are on Honeymoon", I eventually asked. "Who else would be daft enough to go away in this weather", was the reply.
Well the point being we were new to sleeping overnight, and I didn't know whether I had to leave a window open to give us enough air to breath through the night. Not wanting to risk it. I left the side window open about three inches, and apart from the cold draught all was well. Money geting shorter, and weather getting colder I decided to return home to Mom and Dads till our bungalow was ready. Arrived back safe and sound and sat on the setee with a cuppa. Then I came to get up. The cold air had got to my back and I was bent over double for the next few days. Well you can imagine the comments, ranging from, "take it steady next time," to "well done son?" (I checked and didn't need the window open after all.) Rgd's Graham.

MY FIRST CAMPER WAS A 1971 BAY WINDOW VW TIN TOP,AFTER HAVING IT FULLY RESTORED HEADED OF TO THE ISLE OF WHITE OURSELVES.tHE FIRST NIGHT I DIDN'T LEAVE A WINDOW OPEN AND WOKE UP GASPING FOR AIR (THREE OF US IN THE VAN),WE NOTICED LATER THAT IF YOU SAT IN THE VAN AND SLAMMED THE DOOR SHUT IT HIRT YOUR EARS IT WAS THAT AIR TIGHT,PITTY I HAVEN,T GOT IN KNOW WITH ALL THE FLOODS WE HAVE THESE DAYS,SHAWBAGS.
