Westward Truck Stop/Plymouth Ferry Port

Our son is coming in on a Royal Navy Ship just before Christmas
We would like to see the ship enter Plymouth Sound and will be viewing from Devil's Point, Plymouth(Unless anyone knows a better viewing location?)
Question is where to stay over the night before?
Has anyone used The Westward Truck Stop at Ivybridge which is about 10 miles from Plymouth?
Failing that The Ferry Port charges £10 pn but does that just apply to ferry users?
