This just posted up on FaceBook on the CamPrA page.

So, just to point out to all the doubters and cynics, not everywhere is anti or nimby... ;)

Staying in the free car park in the centre of Hawick tonight
I was sitting in my campervan just watching the world go bye and this very nice lady came across and gave me a a lovely welcome to Hawick and I cannot remember what organisation she represented but it was like community council
She explained to me that she comes down every night to welcome the Motorhomes
She then gave me details of the car park toilets and where to get fresh water and she was also handing out free Welcome to Hawick guides
I chatted to this lady for about 20 minutes as we had quite a few things in common but one thing she told me which I found interesting is there is a big flood prevention job getting done and part of it there is going to be an area where you can get rid of your waste water from the campervans
Hats off and salute the Hawick community for what they are doing.

Marie, it started back in 2012 and has been mentioned on here loads of times

No matter, I think it is still relevant when comparing different approaches by different councils/communities alongside the current situation and (perceived?) increased pressure with 'staycation' mohos due to the virus, no?

Every credit to them for going ahead with this scheme and to start with it was great and really peaceful quiet nights after the then boy racers who kept themselves to themselves at the other end of the car park left after very naughtily throwing their Maccy D`s rubbish on the floor instead of in the bin a few yards away.

The last time we went it was a completely different story and if it wasn`t for the downright dangerous boy racers now who take great delight in trying to get as close as they can to your motorhome when they drive past at breakneck speeds i wouldn`t have bothered putting the link on but members need to be aware that this activity takes place on there.

I rang the police and reported it but no one turned up and when i mentioned it to the guy who cleans the toilets the following morning he said the authorities already knew about it but nothing ever gets done.

They seriously need to do something about them before someone gets killed given the speeds the lunatics drive at on the car park in question.

Friends were supposed to be going there on a motorhome fun weekend. The organiser asked that Hawick authorities and was refused. So they all turned up as independent travellers instead. Our friends said that one night there were 21 vans there. But the local press came and did an article on them and talked about how much money they had or spent in the town over the weekend. The group of Funsters had spent £2000 between about 12 of them. The press article was really favourable. All the local businesses that were interviewed talked about how respectful the visitors were with facemasks and social distancing and how grateful they were that they had come.

Spent a night there and went to a local pub for a meal. Landlord said he welcomed Motorhomers to the town. "if you don't spend your money in my bar", he said, "you spend it somewhere else in town". A wonderful attitude made even better by a free pint "to say thank you for visiting our town".

As an aside to the Carpark stopover at Hawick, there is an excellent little shop selling Camping stuff, including for Caravans and Motorhomes, if you need any gear.
Called Borders Leisure - https://www.bordersleisure.co.uk/en/camping-shop - It is worth dropping into.
I used to buy quite a bit of stuff from them when they were still in Jedburgh and found them cheaper then the typical on-line seller.

(PS. no connection to them apart from being a satisfied customer)

We stayed in the carpark a couple of years ago. Lovely little place to explore. Don't park on Friday nights though or you may find the market set up round you on Saturday morning. I seem to remember the school buses all picked up from there in a morning.
