In the summer, spring and autumn I do this every other weekend as close as damn it, I can get to Hayfield in 40 mins, Bakewell in an hour and 20, monsall head , same as bakewell, and Delamere forrest in 1 hour 30.
In winter i go to Leek C&CC site as it is open all year, usually every 4 weeks or so, However this weekend it is up to Lenny's Donny fest.
This is what keeps a bit of sanity in my life, doing a bit of walking, talking and supping away from the normal weekend chores.'

I will drive for a couple of hours at the most for a weekend away, maybe a bit further if it,s a meet or gathering.
I always aim to return for early evening Sunday to prepare for work on Monday.;)

You guys that have not yet been to Carrog, should maybe try it as the location is really nice with the river Dee and the village and many walks:cool::cool:
The campsite has NO showers, but our vans can provide bathing & washing facilities:D, just a pity that when I tried to arrange a Wild camping Forum Meet there that the farmer insisted on a minimum of 8 vans after previously agreeing to a minimum of 5 vans:eek:

Think if you try this year Graham you will get more than 8 if this weekend turn out is anything to go by.
Put me down for Carrog
Rob

HIa
My late husband (odd saying late as Rob was never late for anything:D) and I went to carrog on the rally field for a few days when we were hit with his diagnosis and prognosis. We soon forgot our bomb shell so to speak. We backed onto the steam railway line and could watch the trains arrive and leave. We had the calling to travel on one of the trains well in one of the carriages and went into Llangollen to our favourite pub on the bridge where we could do what we did well sit outside in the sun enjoying the beers and lager and oven wedges and garlic Um My hubby knew how to look after me
He saw a kingfisher down by the river. We went up the hill sorry I would call it a mountain he would beg to differ and so it was a hill.

What I am saying CARROG is a lovely place.

Graham when you go to Delemere and Conkers I would be interested in yours and Kaths opinion as I have given these 2 sites a little interest.

getting back to where we go for a weekend.
I am promising myself to use the Camping & caravanning Clubs DA sites eg Farmers field with water tap and elsin point
Pot luck if a pub is near by.
But a cheap weekend hopefully and within a few miles. One weekend coming up is Astley Green Musuem which is about 17 miles from home another is a place called Goostry ( I think this one is behind a pub) which is a few miles. So You don't have to go with the DA you are afiliated to you can go with any so if you are members have a look in the out & about for weekend and even holiday meets.

Hello Wee-z
Myself and Zippybo are lucky enough to live in Plymouth which means it only takes 15mins to get into Cornwall:)
We've still pretty new to wilding (bought first van this time last year)...the major lesson we've learned is 'organisation and preparation'...we've braved the winter months doing over-nighters all over Cornwall and we can't wait for the spring to arrive so that we can head out for 2/3 nighters....
My favourite spot has got to be Trebarwith Strand which takes roughly 45 mins to drive to on a good run...we park up at the cliff edge and repay the landlord of the Port William (who owns the land) by eating and drinking in his establishment....saying that, the last time we stayed there last Autumn, the pub had just changed hands so we're hoping to receive the same lovely welcome we had from the previous manager when we return....fingers crossed!:)

We travel between 1-2 hrs ish for a week-end away, living near Welshpool this would get us anywhere in North Wales, parts of Derbyshire, and down as far as Herefordshire and a line accross to the coast of Wales. All in all, some lovely spots. This coming week-end is a biggy, travel up to the meet at Whitehouse Farm, est travel 31/4hrs, looking forward to that.

Happy Camping:)

Hi Polly, we call it a mountain as well as when we get to the top we are totally knackered:(:(:D:D
Regarding Delamere and Conkers, we have been meaning to go to both of these for a long time now:)
Delamere in a couple of weeks and Conkers 2 weeks later:)

Hi *****, you will not be dissapointed with Delamere C&CC site if you like to walk through nice quiet forests. A map is available from the site office. Walks range from 3 to 11 miles if I remember. Also ideal for biking, jogging:cool:
You can get the train (station next door) to Chester for a few quid, takes 40mins, remember to hold your hand out so the driver knows your travelling, and he will stop.:D Enjoy your trip.

Happy Camping:)

We lived in Plymouth (Colebrook) for 18 years:cool:
We married there and our daughter was born in Freedom fields:D
What a nice place:cool: we know it well

Freedom fields isn't far from us...its now a posh, new housing estate!!Funnily enough, Zippybo used to work in Freedom House for a while which is the only remaining hospital building on the site...which now has also been turned into posh flats!!
Small world hey!
Did you/do you ever wildcamp on Dartmoor *****?We keep meaning to do it but just haven't got round to it yet...I'm aware that there's a small site round the back of the Plume of Feathers in Princetown though I always find that place a bit spooky though with the prison looming over everything!!lol

Polly, you will love Delamere forrest, the site is new and you can walk and cycle for miles, There is also a "go ape" course bordering the site
Went twice last year once in mid Feb, and once to see Elbow in concert aas they have a weekend in June when the forrestry commision put on huge open aire concerts, that was a great weekend.

Weekenders

Hi tony, good thread this one, speaking for myself weekends can be a bit limited due to living on the coast it takes 50 minutes on a good day to reach the motorway(m6).The lakes is always an option but you have to be selective where you park up.Not keen on having to leave early, seems to defeat the object of a relaxing weekend.Favourite spot is at Caerlaverock near Dumfries so thats around two and half hours drive. When returning home on a Sunday you get all the southbound traffic heading back to the m6,can cause tailbacks towards Kendal during the summer months,Andy:)

distance

i am lucky to stay in a stunning coastal area in scotland and have many times spent the weekend ,in the van ,10mins from where i live, great for nipping back to use the shower. you really dont have to go far to have a "wild" weekend, its just been out there that counts.

Nowadays

please bear with me but where is Trebarwith Strand???

a weekend in france or belgium or holland is about our max for a weekend
driving 4 hours fron calais in any direction from a friday afternoon crossing is not unusual returning on sunday night
aproximatly 400 miles each way from home
but we only do this if we have a pre aranged meeting with friends or relatives

Usually set off straight from the office on a Friday afternoon lap top in tow (my van also doubles up as an office-sad but true).

Have been known to arrive back in the office on a Monday morning parked up in the road directly outside having set off early form a Sunday spot that was just too good to leave early.

Average miles/time?Depends on the weather and who/what I plan to meet/see, can be anything between 20 miles to 420!

Still looking for the woman of my dreams to share it all with though....:(

Generally I can be in the Lakes,Snowdonia or the Peak District in about 2 Hours from home.
If I can get away early enough Abit further afield like Oxford Cotswolds area.
One of my favourite sites is Bwch yn Uchaf, Llanuwchllyn go through Balla follow signs to Lakeside railway. Pub restaurant 10 min walk, but book, EHU,showers and a site owner who is too nice to be a Welsh farmer!

Carrog and Conkers

Been to Carrog a few times during winter - lovely spot - very quiet and hard standing. Where is Conkers?
