Water Purification

Hi Guys,

We're heading on a 8 week adventure from the UK, up to Sweden and taking a long route through Austria back home.

I'm wondering if any of you use any water purification systems? I'm guessing there's some form of tablets you can put in the water tank as well as a full, plumbed in filtration system.

What do you use?

Cheers

hi. i use a berkenfeld system by doulton obtainable from browncurch landrover london. ..othersuse nature pure . both ar advertised in landrover mags and the nature pure in m,home mags. you may find you never use it .i have had mine 11 years and even on deep africa trips usually find drinking water available. with the right system like the ones i mention you can just about drink any water. but havent had to yet. mine uses a ceramic candle and silver inlay .silver is natures best purifier of water. alla wishing wells and cowboys keeping silver dollars in their water billies. have fun. cheers alan.

Thanks for your replies, I'll look into this stuff now.

A few weeks ago whilst wild camping, our water supply became depleted and we were in he middle of no where! As a result we ended up filling our tank half way with some fast running river water just next to us. This tasted fine and seemed like the normal thing to do, growing up as a country boy.

However I forgot to empty the tank and about a week later found that the bacteria has multiplied and moss type stuff was floating around in clumps!

its best to have a black plastic water tank .there is something in the black plastic helps chemically .also as no light can get to the water it should stop the growth of algie etc. we very often drink river water when in way out places.ideally boilit for a few minutes then let it cool .i also have a small hand pump purifier for when going on foot or m,bike but havent used it much. there is alot of stuff out there .have a look in some of the adventure mags like lonely planet or peep in w,h,smiths at a few.

If you are heading to Scandinavia and the majority of mainland Europe you probably don't need to worry about purification systems if you will be solely using the piped water supply.

If you will need to fill from streams etc. then you would be wise to use purification or filtration.

Take a look at: Ensuring clean, safe and palatable water in your motorhome.
It's a little outdated now but covers most of the options.

Personally we always fill from a piped supply but we do use the Naturepure system: Nature-Pure Chemical-Free Water Purifiers- General Ecology Europe to filter drinking/coooking water. Had no problems at all throughout Europe, Morocco and Turkey.

Been using nature pure purifiers for years. Never any probs. NB this is a purifier not just a filter.
