Water Pump

Hi,
can someone tell me how to get the water out of my water pump, I have drained the tank but there must be some left in there as the frost last night has frozen the pump and blows the fuse if you try to use it. Also the flushing water in the toilet has frozen and that wont work either, I dont want it to damage the toilet tank but cant get it out to sort it out.
I expect later today or tomorrow if we dont have frost tonight that it might sort itself out but would like to make certain it does not happen again.

Silly question here is there a antifreeze that can go in the cassette tank?

Regards to you all

You should be able to access the bottom of the flush tank and remove a hose to drain the water. Failing that, keep flushing until the tank is empty.

Your water pump should not really be a problem unless there is also water left in the delivery hose from the pump. Did you open all your taps and put the mixer ones to the central position? Also, have you opened ALL of the drain taps. There should be one for cold and one for hot.

While this cold spell is on, maybe you could put a bit of heat into your van and wait for a thaw.

Hi Maingate,

I have done that, I removed the pipe and fitted a drain tap, but there must still be some left in the pipe. I did leave the tap open (only have cold tap) and I thought I had it all out. I will have to wait for a thaw:)
I cant get any heat to the van unless I leave the gas blower on as I have to park the van outside our bungalow in the road and I dont think people would like it if I was to run a cable out to run a electric heater, did think of running it there overhead, might do that.
The Cassette Water tank has also frozen I did drain out most of the water but left a little in just in case we went out for the day, do you know if there is a antifreeze that could be added to this tank?

Best Wishes
Tony

Given the fact that water freezes at 0 degrees, you could try putting some washing up liquid in the flush water. It should not do any harm in the short term and it will mean that the water should not freeze unless the temperature gets really low.

Submerged pumps have a non-return valve in them but the dregs of water usually slowly seeps past it and back into the tank. I have not heard of them being damaged unless there is quite a bit of water in the line. Starting the pump when it could be frozen might have done some damage but if the fuse popped instead then you might be OK. When it thaws, try just a quick on and off to check it. Do not let it run dry for any length of time. You could always remove it and take it indoors. That way you can get the model number in case you need a new one or just want a spare.

When we winterise our vans(statics) in Holland, we use normal car antifreeze....an egg cup down each plug hole and a little in the toilet cistern......rubber seals in there etc and it seems to do no harm

In respect of the taps , is it possible to blow any residual water out with an airline ? thats how we do it

Thanks for that Channa, I will give the antifreeze a go, I did wonder if I could do that, I also was thinking of useing car screen wash which has a little antifreeze in it, does the antifreeze stain the toilet bowl if it is used.
