i know this is a silly question but we have never used our van in this country before and are heading off up the west coast soon intending to wild camp all the way and are wondering if campsites will allow us to empty and fill our water and empty the "dreaded loo" and if not then where do we do it ? wish we had Aires as in France !! x

Being a lazy git can I refer you to a copy of this months MMM, in it they have a list of places to overnight with a sub article on camp sites that will let you stop, shower, empty and refill tanks and rest for up to 4 hours for a few quid, the same mag is also listing a campaign for British aires and van parks.

Water

The camping club allow you to stop on most sites for a few hours(aprox£4.50) .You can empty and fill tanks ,use laundry and showers.
Some garages will allow you to fill up with water(always ask!).
We also use public toilets for emptying the loo(it goes without saying leave them clean)
We've used fresh water off the mountains if it is running quickly .

Hello Jan,
We use public loo's to empty our cassette toilet as well. What's the difference between doing that at home or when we're away?
It's quite surprising how one can find a public loo in out of the way places and offer the privacy to do so.
Yep, ditto we've used mountain streams to top up our water tank as well, try it in Switzerland the water is superb. We used to use a powdered drink called "rise and shine" with the mountain water and it was terrific. In them days we were always conscious of the weight we were carrying and were very into powdered products such as soup etc.
as it was always lighter than tins. Nowadays we always watch what different fats are in the dried products, my wife is in charge of that, for example, we don't use "pot noodles" as they have undesirable fat content.

With friendly greetings,
Draaiorgel. (Ian)
