Water access

Sorry if this has been suggested before but would it be an idea to add to the POI where water is freely available.

We find on tour that fuel and sewage are not an issue but accessing water is.

Kind regards

Yes I agree. We can only fill up with a hose as has a special connection, not like our last one that you could have just tipped water into it.

Not being funny but why not a funnel with the other part of the special conection? So that you can use a water can etc., to fill up sometimes.

Check this out if you have a problem with water....I have the Bottle, but am buying the Jerry Can and will be using it
to fill the onboard tank....I'll carry the bottle as well for use away from the vehicle, or perhaps as a double filter for
the coffee etc.

The ASDA filling station at Monks Cross just outside York has a free tap on the side of the tyre/water fillup (which you have to pay for). Tastes OK.

This thread is rambling a bit, we too have a "connection" for our tank and we use a 20m hose to connect to a tap.

The issue for us is where to get 40 odd gallons of water with out buying it. Like garages and graveyards.

If collectively we can produce the POI for stop overs would a similar map not be a god send for water?

Kind regards

There's never a problem getting water. Just have some versatile filling equipment that you can use with all kinds of taps and sources.

Sorry but we have to disagree. We have had quite a lot of bother getting water which is why we started this thread. For instance we were told there was none to be had in Peebles but we sussed out two sources. That is the kind of info which makes things just run that bit smoother on a trip.

I agree, which is why I'm going for the Jerry solution....as it's pump pressurised a small hose can be
attached to the outlet end if you only have a connection rather than able to fill directly.

Then I'll just use whatever is available with preference to outside taps at garages or clean rivers
to preserve the filter for as long as possible....with the lifesaver it takes out viruses too so the water
is sterile no matter how dirty the source. (Viruses are the smallest - a lot smaller than bacteria.

Some garages annoyingly now have little pay cabinets with air and water with screen wash in it (non potable) but there are many still with a normal water tap. Even if it's tricky to get enough to fill the whole tank you can always get a 10 litre container filled to tide you over.

I can also say that I never have trouble finding water. 15 weeks in mainland Europe this year, about half on aire's and half wilding. Always found a tap and toilets for dumping.
We use a watering can and top up daily and never let the water tank get anywhere near empty.
Most villages abroad have a tap. In the UK garages are the easiest, buy some fuel and fill the water.

Still worth a thought though. Some people are less able to be "cheeky" about finding water. Personally I've never had problem but only been at it short while. But I have plenty of front and don't mind asking or just taking.

Thanks...that's interesting....I wonder what size they are as the lifesaver filter holes are 15 nm?

ah found the answer - under 10 nanometers, typically 2 -3 nm, so I wonder are these prions found in water
in our mountain streams, rivers etc?

The issue is one of effort involved - you say that collectively we can produce the POI for stop overs ...

Strictly speaking that isn't true. It's just me that collates and maintains all the information.

Adding places that water can be accessed is possible, but it's not really something I want to do, because it's going to be a huge amount of work.

I know that Phil is working on other ways that location information can be recorded by members - hopefully that can be used for submission of information about access to water.

I have tried to find out if there are any information sources listing public toilets and their locations, but without success so far. Such a list would be invaluable for toilet emptying, and taking on water.

It was mentioned that there was previously thought to be no source of water in Peebles

But there must be many pubs, tea houses, and garages who would be glad to oblige. If all else fails just stop by for a coffee and ask if they have a tap you can fill from or simply fill a 10 litre container for you.

You can use stream water for flushing toilets and if you really desperately need drinking water and don't like boiling or purification tabs you can buy 2 litre bottles for 15p to 20p major supermarket own brand. It's not going to break the bank.

Such a directory would be a nightmare to compile and keep up to date - there are hundreds of places in most towns, but if someone wants to take on the task it maybe useful for those new to living off the grid :)

Sorry for thread drift but we fill our Starspirit tank through the screw hatch in the tank top with a jerry can. The pressure regulated hose is a PITA, especially if there's a queue for water and you take 10 times longer than everyone else.

A growing number of garages in the UK no longer have an outside tap.

We do not go abroad and so this is our issue in the UK hence starting the thread.

W just did a tour round Scotland (wilding) clinging to the coast and recorded
on the map any places we passed that looked good to overnight and also anywhere we got water and
places to dump the toilet and rubbish.

I agree water was the more difficult one (in the scheme of things) to get for us.

<<we always disinfect the taps due to seeing too many cassette's shoved around the water tap>>

Thanks for that tip...somehow never thought of that.
