Hi folks hope you have all recovered from the overeating ETC.

Just had a phone call suggesting I do not buy at B&Q sale as they appear to have increased prices by a fair amount before making up a Sale Price.

check it out if you are looking for tools and things:(

I thought that was normal for almost all of the big retailers.

I know that Comet increased the price of many of their tv's a week or so before christmas. two reasons; firstly so that they can reduce them in the new year sale, and secondly so that when they reset the 'normal' price they can get their prices back to end in 99p as the reduction in VAT messed with their prices and they wanted a way to take the 2.5% reduction for themselves and not give it to the punter.

I used to work in the furniture trade and here double pricing as it is called is endemic. Simply explained a shop sells an item for say 50% above its normal mark up to establish its price. This has to be done for a set period of time to comply with trading standards and to "establish" the price. Afterwhich the shop reduces to the original price to show a 50% reduction. Their margins are never affected. Why it is so prevalent in the chains is you only need to establish in one or two shops to be able to advertise in 100 shops or more. Believe you me all of the 50%'s off advertised by major high street chains is absolute rubbish if not downright lies. But then I realise I am probably not telling anyone what they didn't already know or at least suspect.

prices

i think that nearly all shops seem to be doing it. in our shops long before xmas they all had sales varying between 40 and 70 percent, as we all know i think that this is the normal retail price, dont know what there going to do for the newyears sale, pay us i suppose ?

At my local supermarket they increased the price of fish 'n' chips in the cafe a few weeks ago and now it is on "special" at a reduced price, giving the impression that you are getting a bit of a deal!

they must think we are silly our world of sport had bikes for 49.99 in November now there reduced to guess what 49.99. the ticket now has a 99,99 price on it with a line through it,i suppose they have them on sale somewhere in a shop in Antarctica at that price to make it legal

Warning credit crunch

If i remember rightly the law states goods have to be advertised at a higher price for 28 days consecutively for items to be priced as "sale prices".Easy for a multinational chain to do this at one branch without losing profits:mad:Then lo and behold prices are reduced and everyone thinks they are getting a bargain, the old adage of buyer beware applies i think.Andy.

Also to bear in mind, most things purchased from the popular superstores is made to their own spec, which is inferior to goods bought from specialised retailers. Such is their buying power that they dictate the quality of their stock. So beware even if its got dulux, hoover, or any other famous name on it, its made to their cheaper spec using their own supplied parts or materials. These places aren't cheap anyway plus the fact if its paint you buy you'll need twice as much because its like water!.

the only reason supermarkets sell items cheaper is because of there buying power not inferior products, after all a hoover is a hoover and a tin of dulux is the same as any other tin of dulux , they are all made the same person respective of who sells them. its like saying a can of a well known larger is inferior to one sold in a local off licence. i dont use supermarkets as i prefer to shop local works out cheaper in the long run as you only buy what you need (also gives the smaller man a living and regulars almost always get a little knocked off the bill) not what the supermarket want you to buy ie how many times have you gone for a small amount of things and ending up spending a fortune on things you dident really need( power of persuasion ) but the quality is still the same .

What some supermarkets are doing now is saying something like "...hundreds of items reduced...", but read the small print and it's because of the reduction in VAT, nothing to do with any of the stores.

I didn,t say supermarkets are cheap in fact they are, I find expensive. The point i'm making is :for instance Dulux paints, Dulux do in fact make the Dulux paint sold in B&Q etc, but it is as I say made to their spec, i.e in the case of emulsion more watered down,in which case you need twice the amount. As a full time decorator I come across this a lot, with customer supplied paint, twice the work needed, (even the paint reps will tell you). With washing machines etc its the same principle, the superstores actually supply their own parts to the relevant makers ie (Hotpoint) to be assembled at their works, so its not its not much more than the badge thats the same! Tiles are cheap but watch the powder adhesive, same price as decorating shops per kg, AHH but it only mixes half as much, 4to1 as opposed to 2to1 with water.
Anyway thats my moan, its back to Motorhomes from now for me on this site.

as long as a retailer has had the goods on sale at a exorberant price in one of there remote branches in the uk
they can then advertise the same goods calling them a sale price reduction . fooling you into thinking there has been a price reduction in your local store
