Vehicle Weight _Driving Licence

When I bought my latest second hand motorhome it happened to coincide with my 70th. birthday. I bought her in England and drove her straight back to my home in Spain. Some time later I happened to look at my driving licence and thought " I used to have more categories than this. Where have my C C1 C1E D1 D1E categories gone? Hang on how big is the new van?
Quick look under the bonnet 3500kg. That's ok then. Hold on what's this:- Front axle 1800kg Rear axle 2600kg. That's 4400kg.
OK now Can I drive it on my B licence? A quick look at the Registration Certificate. Private Light Goods, 2 axle rigid body _ same as the car I used to have _ must be OK!
Quick look at the Direct Gov Website. Max Loaded Weight not more than 3500kg!
Oh well! I'm illegal, on two counts now! I should have changed my British licence to a Spanish one ages ago. I kept meaning to do it. If I change it now they'll only give me a B B1 .
Only solution, back to the UK, take a medical, and request my categories back. 2 months later all done.
The moral of the story is, do things properly in the first place. A Spanish licence and I would have had medicals automatically and there would not have been a problem.
As regards the weight restrictions on licences, why can't the DVLA put the categories needed to drive any particular vehicle on the Registration Document? No confusion. Too easy probably!
p.s. Sticking with the British licence, selling the house and going home. Don't want to but the wife does!
 
If the Gross weight marked on the VIN plate is 3500kg you can drive it on a category B licence, it doesn't matter what the individual axle weights are.

However the motorhome must not weigh more than 3500kg fully loaded otherwise you could be done for overloading. From the axle weights you give it looks like it's been downplated to 3500kg, if I were you I'd get it on a weighbridge to see what it actually weighs!

My van is plated at 3850kg, when it was registered by the dealer he mistakenly did it at the 3500 kg. When I collected the vehicle he gave me the new plate to get it registered at the 3850 (PHGV) looking at the 2 plates they were identical for the axle weights it was just the MGW that was different. I think it is usual that the sum of the axle weights is greater than the overall weight.

Yes, it's to allow for uneven loading.
We bought an FFB A class motorhome a few years ago, from memory the GVW on the VIN plate was 2900kg but the axle weights were 1600kg and 1900kg, we got the GVW replated to 3500kg by SVTECH with no problem. Just as well because it weighed around 3000kg with nothing on board!

Had the van weighed with full water and fuel, driver and afew bits and pieces. 3860kg. I have 2 axles 4 wheels on back. What next folks? Have I got a white elephant? Shame cos I love it!
 
One of my big annoyances when looking at vans, ask most salesmen what's the payload & more often than not the answer is 'loads'. My next question is then ok HOW MUCH, only to find many on a 3.5 chassis only have around 300 to 350kg :eek: Salesmen will then try to convince you that this is ample :rolleyes: , this payload usually only includes a driver of 70kg (I wish :rolleyes:) fuel/water/waste partly full. Straight away add partner & difference between 70kg & actual weight & that's probably a 100kg gone from your generous 350kg.

I think that a vehicle should deduct from the payload at least the 70kg x the number of berths so a 3 berth would be 210 kg but a 6 berth 70x6= 420kg

Well, if you have got the C1 category back on your driving licence then that's not a problem, what you need to do is is get it replated so that it is legal to operate. From the axle weights you gave I don't think that should be a problem. What is the base vehicle?

I suggest you contact SVTECH and see what they can do for you.

Andy, in answer to your question the base vehicle is an Iveco Daily 35C13CCS.
By the way when a vehicle is replated to a weight above 3500 is it still described as Private/Light Goods?
