Just been reading elsewhere about vehicle classification on the V5 should be Motor Caravan. What are the benefits/drawbacks. My van has been a Motorhome since new ,1997, but on the V5 it is classed as Body Type,Special Purpose , Taxation Class Private/Light Goods . Should it be changed?

Do you get charged the MH road tax or van tax. I guess you can park where MH can’t.

I don't think it really matters much, but I could be well wrong! :ROFLMAO::LOL::cool:

  • Private and light goods (PLG): This is by far the most common tax class. It primarily consists of cars and light vans but can include other vehicles used only for private purposes. Tax bands for cars within PLG depend on engine size for vehicles first registered before March 2001, while the tax bands for cars registered after March 2001 are based upon levels of CO2 emissions, with lower rates for cleaner vehicles.

Vehicle has to be no more than 3.5 tonne.

My Sprinter conversion is registered as a motor caravan (which I thought by Law it had to be?). I pay the van Road tax but get cheaper insurance. £175.00 fully comp with extras per year.

Showing my ignorance here, but I didn't know there was a special tax for motorhomes?

I'd always assumed the tax was based primarily on the engine type and the weight of the vehicle?

HGVs, buses and coaches have a different tax, but isn't a motorhome or camper under 3.5 tonne just a PLG vehicle anyway?

My sprinter is 3.5 ton without the conversion and its plg as you say.

There is no 'special tax' for motor caravans of this age, it will be the old over 1400cc tax class same as several vehicles I've got.
p.s. as it's not registered as motor caravan you will probably have to comply to commercial van speeds.

But it’s plated up to 3.850

It appears to be in the wrong tax class, if it's above 3.5t should be PHG and then it is a much lower tax.

Over here when I converted my van I left some things out of the van so it did not pass as a motorhome now if I go fishing for an instants there is a sign saying no motorcaravan's I have been been pulled by the police many times and just show my logbook and they leave me alone now.

You don't see it very often but "Special Purpose" is typically a Motor Caravan. It is tied up with the Vehicle Category (J) of "M1 (SP)" that was used later on but on vehicles your age tended to be left blank (nowadays that will typically N1 or M1).

The PLG bit for an over 3.5t vehicle is a bit strange. I had the same with my van - 4600kg GVW but taxation class of PLG. Is is contradictory and does mean the tax is £265 or something when it should really be a PHGV with a tax of £165 (rates might be £5 out. can't recall for sure)
