I like the use of the engine coolant to heat the oil, very ingenious :)

Where's the salt and vinegar kept? I was always starving when I used veggy as my car smelled like a chip van, great bit of plumbing though:D

what exactly have you done why dont you just pour the filtered oil into the fuel tank and have a second filter on the system i know you are pre heating it before the pump but you could do that with a heater inside the fuel tank instead of adding all that pipe work and tank

A couple of valid points to note:always check to see if your vehicle is ok to run on veg oil or bio fuel. Some manufacturers do not recommend using it.Also consider with new-ish vehicles warranty issues.Apart from that brill idea.

the reason i have done it this way is i don't want to rely on one tank.
if i have any problems with say the cold waxing up my lines or filters i can quickly shut down the veg oil tank, til its hot enough to unblock. if i (somehow put a heater&bought i presume)in the main tank theres still the problem of it staying warm to the pump(thus the oil dropping in temp and causing pump to work hard) my way everything is easy to maintain/use,no fancy bits to go wrong and heated to and from the pump thus lowering the viscosity to (i reckon)below that of diesel, again the pump works less harder.
if i carried out the conversion you suggest ,how would you start the engine initially from cold?would i be relying on the heater in the tank to heat the oil immediately to the pump? to purge my system takes 20 secs max. in the system you suggest vegoil would be standing in the lines and pump all the time and if it waxes or is thick the pump will have to work harder(this is why a lot of pumps prematurely pack up).how would the heater in the tank be heated? if electrically its open to faults, would the tank have to be removed to install heater?can i just pick a heater for the tank from any shop and install in 5mins? if i fitted 3/6 port valves they are electrically operated and open to expensive fault! my system was built for@£30 less than i 3port valve, its been run like this for 18,000miles/2yrs and works superb.

this is my tried and tested system and in no way am i saying anyone should copy me,just showing what can be acheived for so little and how i overcome problems associated with running in vegoil.

ps tuf177 is that oil still available i have tried to pm you, if you pm your no. i'll call you to sort it out!

I like this idea, My concern is that I just chuck veg oil in my tank about 25% veg is all I will risk, its very 'all or nothing' if I used more and I waxed up I'm shafted. Having a second tank you can always change to derv at a moments notice to get home,

Being able to run up to heat on derv then switch to pure veg as I hit the motorway for a long cruise is very appealing.

I think its a good system, harder work to make but a good one, well done mate :)

iv run veg oil for 2yrs now in all my vans on a single tank system even in this cold spell we just had and yes the van didnt want to start in cold weather but did start in the end and yes we run 99% veg oil and never had the problems of pipework due to cold you only get the problem with pipework it its sat for long periods of time and not used we have never had a single problem running vergin oil straight to my pump ok people do it cheaper as our learnered freind does it good on him but i just buy for 70p ltr and chuck in and drive

the whole point of my doing this is that i can get loads of waste veg oil (wvo) for nothing, i filter it and burn it, cost to me after initial set-up nowt:), i do agree after time the engine will start but why put the engine/pump through stress? whether its 70p or £1.20 (at our local pumps) i make a tremendous saving do you not think?,850 miles to scotland and around then return £10 in diesel! can't do that on a train!! estimation of normal diesel or virgin oil@70p @28 mpg = £103.

ps tuf177 i've tried to pm you but it says your not set up to receive pm's, how much you want for it? if you can send me adiff. email addy i'll contact you via that tony.;)

my only question is wheres the MOT station that passes that setup with an unrestrained plastic container under the bonnet with a piece of rag stuck in the top as a cap

the tank is restrained, and as for the rag as a cap that was what i wiped the system down with and there are actually sealed tops on with a breather pipe!!!!the vans just passed mot.

.

what will happen if i chuck in to my ducato 2.8 turbo tank 20 ltrs of tesco veg oil with my next fill....it holds 80 lts

OK been looking at this with great interest.
i took think i might be able to sort some waste cooking oil.but how are you filtering it.the preheating i can work out thanks to your photo's

dieselveg.com(wolverhampton) have done a successful conversion of your vehicle to run on waste veg oil.if your serious aj then what your talking about is a 25/75 mix a lot of people run a 40/60 mix now then 75/25 in the warmer months. i'd personally not rec. a single tank thou' and if you read thro' what i've said previous my reasons why! but thats my opinion. i personally have never used virgin oil so don't know if it also waxes up and thickens on cold days.

if you do decide to try i'd suggest disconnectin' your flow and return pipes diesel and add pipes to your fuel pump plus a filter on the flow and put these pipes into a 1/2/3 litre bottle of v.oil after warming your engine up a bit and warming the oil a bit(less stress on pump) and see if theres any noticeable diff. to your engine!

theres a few companies who are doing biodiesel (different process and conforming to en standards) @65p, i know of one in manchester and one in bridgnorth:) big savings if you or a m8 pass that way!

if anybody go's down any path with veg oil i strongly suggest changing engine oil twice as often!

hi chubsta,

i preheat the oil on the cooker then filter through a 1 micron bag filter (finest filter) 18" FILTER BAGS , BIO DIESEL ,VEG OIL,W.V.O. 3 BAG SET on eBay (end time 17-Apr-10 15:11:20 BST)

then i pour into my tank under bonnet and as you can see theres another (mesh not paper)filter in-line.

hope that helps! next time i do some i'll take pics and post, if your local to wigan i can sort you some to try.

thanks for that info. my filters are ordered, now just got to try the plumbing under the bonnet and scrounge some of that old cooking oil i keep seeing .
