I have just had my van Insurance renewal through Comfort, been with them for years, & 7 years no claims 10,000 miles a year full breakdown cover and legal protection ,protected bonus and £200 excess on claims , I am 75 , van kept on my drive , only driver, and the van is 16 years old 3,5 tonnes,Right hand drive, no convictions or health concerns, it comes in at £465 this year , £40 pounds more than last year, it seems very expensive to me, I usually shop around each year on renewal but go back to Comfort each year because the others are much the same and cover varies, I am hearing that ABI [ I think Is that the one folks are now going for ] ? is very competitive so am going to try them this time and see what they come up with.
I have my van sorned at the moment and am not Insuring on renewal on the !st May so I have plenty of time to shop around,

Mine's hugely cheaper than that through AIB. It covers 180 days in Europe plus I opted for the breakdown cover because my AA membership doesn't cover Europe unless I pay around £90 extra... with AIB it was £70-something extra and covers the UK too. In all it's still a good £100 cheaper than your quote for a similar type and age of van. I'm sure others will be along with suggestions too.

Oh just a thought as you've been happy with Comfort... why not give them a ring and do a bit of haggling? I've found most insurance, breakdown and utility companies respond with a nice big discount if you've done some comparisons and say are thinking of going elsewhere. Be prepared to quote prices to them that you've found elsewhere. I've managed to stay with British Gas and BT for years this way and got some very good deals.

I think the reason for the increase is partly because you are 75 and premiums are going up in general

I’m waiting for my renewal quote from AIB as mine runs out at the end of the month no news is good news 😂😂

With no planned Euro trips in the MH due to visits to Canada and NZ, [which will probably be cancelled anyway], we went for basic cover @ £265. Even this seems a lot if we don't get to use the MH because of restrictions. :(

As already said phone Comfort, I always get quotes and write them down so that I can haggle with my existing insurer, they have a lot of room to discount because most people don't bother, I have just negotiated with VM to get my broadband/TV and phone bill down from £45pm (already discounted) to £20pm for the same service, I had to be firm and left it until the last day but they don't want to lose you

Yeah mine went up £40 after 14 years with Comfort,no claims,8 yr.old van,63 yr.old driver.Normally goes up about a fiver a time. I was not happy but they were not budging on price when I rang.Paid it this year but will shop around next time, but last time I rang round for quotes only Comfort would insure me as van is my only vehicle.

i got £100 off my quote with AIB because i reduced my prospective annual mileage by 50% - ask your current insurers what they could do in this regard

Was wondering what people were doing. Mines due in May I think. I was wondering if you cancelled it for say three months could you then just renew it. Im with AIB so I can ask them I guess. I get a good deal with them normally.

There is zero chance of the van getting nicked but if its not in use, whats the point of it being insured?

I am still hopeful that at some point later in the summer we will get to use it even if its just to drive to our favourite CL in the UK.

Sorry Barry why can't your van not get nicked. Also depending where its parked another vehicle could damage it, it could be vandalised, catch fire, broken into, etc. I will be renewing mine fully comp. Reduce your annual mileage like Deligirl.

I’m astounded that anyone is even considering not insuring their vehicle when it’s laid up for 2/3 months during the lockdown.
So you save perhaps £30/£40 a month on potentially a motorhome worth between £20,000 - £100,000 then an electrical fault occurs causing a fire and it’s gone !
Worse case scenario but it could happen. I for one won’t be doing it that’s for sure.

Would have to be a super skinny thief :ROFLMAO: and there are two bikes, a scooter and car behind it now. :D Battery is disconnected and its 23 years old so hardly a prime target.

When answering a query on here it’s important to note that advice given to one poster may be taken as sound by another. Your initial post made no mention of any of this. But even after reading your post I would still insure my vehicle.

I probably will. will see what I can get out of AIB. I think we did well less than a 1000 miles last year and even if we get away this year at some point it will probably just be to Flamborough or the Lake district.
