For those that haven't seen one: Bought one of these off ebay Universal Tap Connector Adapter Mixer Kitchen Garden Hose Pipe Joiner Fitting-BL | eBay, they work really well and will fit most taps. Seals to the tap really well with very little leakage. We don't have an outside tap and probably wont bother fitting one now.

I think to connect your hose to a tap that is not of a normal shaped spout allowing filling your tank from say public toilets
