Urgently needed

We need to buy a good gas portable heater which is not too expensive for our motorhome TOMORROW! Ideally we want it to be able to sit on a worktop. Urgent as going away and gas fire broken.

The small propane cylinder ones don't appeal as they seem expensive to run. Ideally something that would clip straight onto a calor gas bottle and chuck out a lot of heat (obviously with sensible ventilation!)

ANY sensible suggestions very welcome please.

I've read your post several times to make sure I'm not missing something......before you go away tomorrow will you please pm me and I will give you my personal details so you can leave me something in your will. The incomplete burning of organic matter such as propane gas due to lack of oxygen (no flue on a worktop) produces carbon monoxide and unfortunately will KILL you!

He should be OK with good ventilation as he says, and a CO alarm. Also, check that flame is burning blue with no trace of yellow... I think he's pretty experienced to know what is needed :)

What Caspar is planning on doing is no different than heating his motorhome with the gas cooker rings. Everybody knows that is a no no! At least it's a painless way to go!

Well I've survived so far, so I don't anticipate you getting millions from my will. With respect, if you don't have a constructive suggestion of a solution, then perhaps you'd be kind enough to leave the thread for those who have. I fully appreciate you are pointing out the dangers, and am honestly grateful for this, but believe me I don't intend leaving this site in peace just yet.

There are quite a few heaters designed for motorhomes / caravans which run off gas. I'm just trying to find a good one asap.

No probs.

My advice is.....postpone any trips until your heater is fixed, go somewhere with a hookup and buy a cheap fan heater, take an extra duvet and manage without heating (it is forecast to be very mild this weekend).

I totally agree with Dave (apart from his choice of football team).

All sorted. I've bought one specifically recommended for caravans and motorhomes. I will, as I always do, even with the normal fire working, have more than necessary ventilation - it means I lose some of the heat, but retain my life. These are designed to run without extra ventilation, so hopefully I'll be back on here posting next Friday, or maybe even while away! Unusually for us (almost uniquely in fact) we're staying on a site, so we'll feel very posh. lol!

Thank you all for your suggestions and a genuine thanks to both for your concern over my life. I do value it though, and don't plan doing anything stupid!

It delays us leaving till Monday, but that doesn't matter in the scheme of things. We can always extend at the other end if we want to, though I suspect I'll have had enough of being on a site after four days and will be getting itchy feet to disappear into the wilderness.

It does actually, but we have often found on EHU that our heater, despite being smallish trips the mains electric both in the van and at the hook up pole. This is why we wanted specifically gas.

Also, when wilding, if the heating problems take longer than anticipated to resolve, or we have problems in the future, we have something to fall back on without starting up the generator.

What we have bought is only a small 1kw heater, but should be enough to warm up the motorhome, even with the extra ventilation. We have a CO meter fitted, so we should be OK there (we actually have two!) and I can't believe these would be for sale in most caravan shops stating they're for caravan usage if they were not safe.

I have an oil filled radiator that I use if on hookup. It is rated at 700 watts and never trips the mains.

Got it from Aldi.

I would rather put on several layers of clothing than an unventilated gas fire.
Not because its cheaper. Because its healthier.

(The heat comes with poison gas. So as far as I can see if you open the windows enough to let the fumes out, you will let all the heat out as well.)

I guess many of the people in this thread will need to pull out their gas rings and fit an electric hob instead... not that you'll ever be able to use it for anything but it will at least be healthier:lol-049:

My gas rings are fixed in a stainless steel plate and not freestanding on a wooden worktop, where they could be knocked over.

Yours is a tin box but a coachbuilt van goes up in flames too readily for my liking. ;)

My gas rings are also fixed into a stainless steel plate and all work surfaces horizontally and to the side and above are covered in stainless steel plates all round the hob area. This is another safety feature if I intend to do "slow cooking" for an hour or so

Well back to the original thread, I am really pleased to announce that my blown air heating system is now fully functioning again.

The person we bought it off had removed half of it and 'hidden' it in various cupboards around the van, including vents, pipe ends, pipes. Today we emptied everything and I've managed, after much damage to my hands, to get the whole lot back together as it should be, it works a treat AND it's properly vented.

Actually, I'm genuinely chuffed as I had no idea how these things worked, so it was a bit like a jigsaw. Didn't realise quite how simple they are, and dread to think what a caravan repair centre would have charged me.

Caspar is a happy, but very stiff boy!
