Undercladding?

Hi wonderful wildcampers, I have a question about the benefits of
getting under van waterproofing done on my 5 year old Tranny. Looking underneath I see the beginnings of rust and wonder if it is worth getting some treatment done, or can I do it myself?
Anybody got any recommendations as I'm in the dark about it's cost effectiveness. Thanks:)

if like me you don't mind getting your hands dirty then i suggest you jack your van up (don't forget axle stands!) and give the underside a good thorough jet wash, then let thoroughly dry. then inspect the underside! if its surface rust use a wire brush or wire brush wheel in drill andbrush it off, if its rot cutting out and welding will be required. then plaster 'tetroseal' underseal onto the underside keeping off the exhaust etc(costs from a proper paint supplier @£14 for 5litres and get a cheapo pk ov brushes)probably take a day if you get stuck in to do the underseal and a couple of hrs to jet wash.

the benefits would be prolonging further damage from salt etc'

last year i welded a new cab floor and a lot of the rear, estimation of time & materials@£600 if i'd had it done proffessionally.i then undersealed it cost@£20 around £550 proffessionally look in mmm! i intend doing every 3 yrs but checking yearly as i want to keep my van as long as economically feasible.

hope that helps

as above but instead of just heaving on the underseal I paint the surface 1st, hammerite is favourite as it has anti rust properties as well...

strangely most underseals will actually allow water through them.

my absolute favoured method is getting all the previous coatings off, red oxide primer, lots of schutz, then paint with hammerite to seal, gives a beautiful/long lasting finish but is very time consuming.

finally for box sections, inner wings etc, liberal use of waxoyl is excellent protection

goods luck in what ever you do :)

Just had my 3 yr old Transit done by "Before n After". Expensive but, I believe sensible if you intend keeping the vehicle.

Thanks guys, I kind of suspected that underseal was a good idea and I know that Trannys are famous for rusting, and want my van to last a good few years.
Shame you can't turn the the van upside down, that would make it a much easier job:D
