Was a nice site at Scourie, I assume it's still there.

You must visit Sandwood bay. Small honesty box type wild camping spot at Sheigra a couple of miles away. It's a 4 mile walk each way to Sandwood bay but well worth it.

I nice walk it is, I don't think it's as nice as it's hyped up to be, but can be quite magical if the conditions are right, including a touch of sun.

Some really great rock formations at the north end, viewable after crossing the outlet from the sandwood loch.

Plenty of wild camping places that far up.

Get some fish and chips in Ullapool the taste will stay with you til Durness, you don't need sites there is loads of wild spots all up that coast, stop for a day at every piece of water and you will see otters, golden and sea eagles pine martins and if you hang on into October you will here the red deer bellowing, amazing scenery and wildlife, and don't forget to fill up with provisions and fuel its expensive at the top of Scotland Ullapool has a large supermarket and fuel station. Thank you so much for all your replies so far very much appreciated tandc.

If you are going up to Durness there is Sango Sands Durness Camping and Caravanning :: Sango Sands :: for Tents & Campervans on the edge of the cliffs with it`s own access to the beach.

Whilst there Cape Wrath http://www.capewrath.org.uk/ is definitely worth a visit along with Smoo Cave Home

If you fancy treating yourself there is Cocoa Mountain Buy luxury chocolate collections and hand made truffles from Cocoa Mountain : from Cocoa Mountain Ltd can`t go up there and not visit, the wife would never forgive me.

Have a good trip

You made a wise choice - enjoy it!

Fuel normally cheaper at Applecross (non profit system) than rip off fuel price at Ullapool.

We were at Applecross 2 weeks ago and the fuel station is as Runnach quite rightly states (non profit system) but very often unmanned although credit cards are accepted when unmanned, there is also a well run Campsite (if I can use that word on here) but beware the road from Applecross clockwise to the North is v.picturesque but the road anti-clockwise to the South goes up quite high ~1,500' I think and is great, but be aware, we met a Tesco Home delivery vehicle coming up to the summit as we were descending, the only problem was that the passing place between us was not large enought to accommodate for two such vehicles, so we had to reverse up the mountain quite some distance and at quite an incline, God only knows what they make these Fiat Ducato clutches out of, the little buggers seem to put up with anything that you care to throw at them!

And.....just when we were reaching ground level on our descent guess what we met at the 'T' Junction...... another damned Tesco Home Delivery vehicle, I think that the natives here have a keen sense of humour.....

But as many contributors have said, Ullapool, you must buy their fish & chips, right by the Ferry Terminal, really well run & v.hygenic although we did sample the best chips ever in the Universe at Stromness in the Orkney Isles.

The Campsite (sorry to use that word once more) at Ullapool is right on the entrance to the harbour so you can sit and watch the ferries all day long if that sort of thing interests you.

Other than that, also as stated, there are oodles of places to Wild Camp, you're really spoilt for choice, all up the North West Coast is really beautiful just choose the narrowest of roads that say 'Not Suitable for caravans' and you'll be guaranteed some of the best views available.

On your way home why not stop at the 'Clachaig Inn' just 2 miles East of Invercoe (next to Glencoe), they serve Vennison & Wild Boar Burgers and other tasty morsels all day long and all their huge selection of draught real ales are £3.20 a pint, the cider's pretty good also, but don't even try to enter this establishment if you're a Campbell, so be warned

At Scourie you can wild camp on the road that leads to the cemetery. It's right on the beach and I'm sure there's a tap at the cemetery if needed. No need to visit that over priced camp site.

I had a right flaming argument with the guy at Scourie campsite over the way he packed people in :mad1:

We was pitched on the little plateau that overlooks the bay and when we arrived there was about a dozen or so vans already on there.

As the day went on he just kept bringing more and more on to the point that both entrances ( either side ) were virtually blocked.

We were packed in like sardines and just as bad as some of the aires in France.

In an emergency you would have had to move at least 3 or 4 vans just to start getting people out.

He didn`t see anything wrong in it as everyone was entitled to and wanted the view.

He said if i didn`t like the arrangement i could leave and he would refund me so we did.

It took nearly an hour to get out and 1 had to put his awning away just so we could get around the corner :mad2:

The caravan site at Scourie did look a bit rammed (and too pricey for me) but plenty room on the wee dead end road to the cemetery.

Is it still under the same ownership? I was last there about 10 years ago and it was run by an elderly gent who rabbited on about independence - lived in the caravan onsite. Nice enough bloke though.

This was 5 years back or so, he was about 6 foot tall and probably 65 - 70 ish then.

He just didn`t see anything wrong in what he was doing, anyone who asked for the view got it and he just kept squeezing more and more on.

Several were plugged into splitters for the EHU, health & safety just didn`t come into it, he wasn`t bothered so long as you paid.

Near Elphin

Hi , there is a good spot with loos , just below Elphin - 58.033542 - 5.071102 .

Hi, we stopped at a really nice WC spot (car park) next to Ardvrek Castle on Loch Assynt when we were there last year. It's just north of Ullapool.
:drive:

Hope you enjoy your trip as much as we did

Ullapool to Durness

As you go through Poolewe, take a left to Cove, stunning views at the site on beach with an 'honesty box'.
:have fun:

Did you go right to the end of the road to see The Russian Convoy Memorials this is where the convoys to Russia were assembled in WW2
