I most unexpectedly recieved a letter from Transport for London informing me that my car may not meet the ULEZ standards in their expanded zones from October. I live in the Midlands and never go to London so thought it odd that Sadiq has authorised such a needless excercise of sending out such a likely huge volume of mail at no doubt great cost to the taxpayer. Will Bristol, Bath etc be sending them out all across the country too? Has anyone else recieved one?

My son received a letter demanding money for his self build pvc from TFL. His motorhome was in his drive sorned!!
when he called them to tell them, they said if you pay the fine we will look into it and there is a possibility it might be refunded. He looked at the picture and it was just a van, but with his reg number. He contacted the local police, who came and verified that it was a different vehicle. TFL still wanted their money, and told him to contact the met police! The biggest worry was that the vehicle might be involved with other offences, such as driveaways at fuel stations or parking offences. TFL‘s only concern was to get the ulez charge paid.

To the OP, as has been mentioned it could be a sign that your vehicle has been cloned.
I would contact TFL and ask why the letter has been sent to you, also point out that you have never travelled to London and when you purchased the vehicle.
This way you are setting up your case if they decide to come after you for fines.
If your “vehicle” has been spotted on London, then maybe time to contact the police

My son received one of Sadiqs letters. We are in N. Ireland!

Thank heavens we dont have any of that here, vh should be exempt if built before it came into force, makes me not want to go over there as I would not have a clue.

Living in the North East of England and with a vehicle that has never been within the A406 - A205 circle I too received one of these letters. It reads as though TFL have spent time and money to interrogate a vehicle database to find the registration numbers of vehicles built before whatever emission standard they are using, the are still taxed and then got DVLA to send out the letters. Must be nice to have nowt better to do and to have the money to do it!

Well he informed TFL that it wasn't his vehicle so it is TFL's problem to prove otherwise. Also as the police have been informed of false plates on another vehicle that should help with any more future comebacks.
If only... Unfortunately, AFAICT, TfL initiate debt recovery proceedings and then send round the bailiffs for any penalty charges they say you owe; and it's up to you to prove your innocence via their system, which appears to be outside the normal courts. (clicky link)
FWIW, there are several tales on the 'net of farmers who have received penalties in respect of agricultural vehicles that have never been within a hundred miles of London. (Including a Warwickshire farmer whose combine harvester hadn't moved for two years) Most of those are from a few years back, so I would hope that TfL have finally got their act together!
