UK Maps

Been using the Wildcamping POI on Google Earth to plan our weekly trips around UK & found some awesome spots to stop then plotted them into my Tom Tom to get us there. Once I find a spot I think I might like I zoom into streetview or as near as possible on Google maps to have a good look round at what the place is really like & whats nearby to make sure it's suitable for our Hymer & a good spot for exercising the dogs (not just a layby on a busy road). Because the Sat Nav doesnt take into consideration the size of vehicle we use, it's ended up trying to take us down some ridiculous roads so I was looking for OS style maps to give us a better Idea about what the actual roads are like. I already managed to choose a place in the Highlands that involved poor Steve having to negotiate Bealach Na Ba the highest pass in Scotland (he wasn't amused) but on the upside every road since then has been a doddle :lol-053:
Anyway back to the maps subject, having a mac, some of the more popular maps only work on PC but if anyone is interested I found the following OS Mapping site ...
www.maps.the-hug.net Free, also Ordnance Survey do a service called getamap Ordnance Survey Leisure getamap, ideal for route planning including walking routes, running routes and cycling routes it allows you to plot routes / walks etc & save them which is free to join or £19.99 a year if you want to print the maps out or get walk suggestions for the area your in at the time. It would cost about £1000 to buy OS maps for the whole UK!
Hope someone finds this useful

Google earth maps

I do the same with google earth/maps, have a good look around first, but remember, the sat maps are 3 years old. I found a nice sopt in Sherringham, when I got there, it was nice new block of flats. Oh well, back to pretty corner.

I've found the OS Tour Maps very useful, as they show things like picnic spots, toilets, food and places of interest. I check out these on Streetview to see what's actually there - or what WAS there, lol!! The only problem is that not all of them are in print now, but good old eBay can sometimes help there. The scale is 1 inch to 1 1/2 miles, and they cover quite a wide area - takes two to cover Wales.

Have just bought my first GPS, a Garmin Oregon, which includes full 1:50,000 Ordnance survey map coverage of the UK thrown in free as well as 1:100,000 topographical maps of all of Europe. Going to be very useful for wild camping as well as walking!

If you got Streetmap - Maps and directions for the whole of Great Britain you can get OS maps for any UK area by using the zoom tool. They often do 1" to the mile and 2" to the mile varient. Set it on 16 squares and use view full screen and you get a good map that you can either print or take a photo using a digital camera and then zoom in on when you are going for a walk.

You don't have to buy anything or subscribe to anything (assuming you have internet and a digicam!)
