tyres

Hi sorry if this is the wrong area to put this question but can anyone tell me if there is new legislation stating that you have to have motorhome tyres especially for motorhomes
fitted as I wanted to get a price on a couple of tyres today (I have got 10ply Nexen all round ) but the answer i got was ( Then it has to be a proper Motorhome/camper tyre, All Motorhomes must have them ) is this correct ? and what is a proper motorhome tyre ? if it is it means I will have to change all my tyres before I go on the continent

As I understand it Camper tyres are specifically for big motorhomes carrying a lot of weight. The issue seems to be that if you have one or more camper tyres along with other tyres an insurance company could refuse to pay out if you have a claim. The reality is that they could refuse to pay out for many things if their mind was put to it.

Take a look here

www.tyresafe.org - Tyre Safety Information - TyreSafe

and read the 'Motorhomes Tyres and Your Safety' booklet.

Chris

I take it that this is the relevant section:

Tyres originally fitted to motorhomes are usually of a ‘Light Commercial’ ‘(C)’ type. They are designed to cater for the higher loads imposed by motorhomes. Before changing the tyre specification always consult either the vehicle or tyre manufacturer. Deviating from the original specification of tyre is likely to have an effect on the handling and general characteristics of the vehicle. Never replace the tyres with
ones of a lower speed rating or load capacity.

and in essence it just says "Light commercial" to meet original manufacturers spec.

Many thanks for replies . now the question is what was the the original tyre fitted to the 1993 Ducato with the Hymer C class body and 16''wheels ?

Hmm, good question! :juggle: Anyone got a manual? Try asking Hymer? Maybe weigh it & ask at several tyre shops to see if there is a consensus?

Do you have the Ducato handbook?

That should tell you, and should match the tyre size that you currently have fitted ...

As far as I know, light commercial vehicle tyres of the correct speed & load rating should be correct? I've never heard of tyres specifically made for motorhomes?

The main thing is to ensure they are the correct size and load/speed rating for the vehicle and of course more importantly that they are kept at the correct pressure which should be checked weekly...

MH can carry a lot of weight - think how much a full tank of water will weigh!

Best of luck with it

Hi Mike they are available from Michelin, Pirrelli etc MICHELIN Agilis Camping | Van Tyres | MICHELIN

They are supposed to have 13 skins or something like that. It was explained to me when I had to replace the front tyres. If you have camper tyres on and don't want to change all four, well five really, you'll need to buy a camper tyre or two. If you don't mind the cost you could replace all five with normal van tyres that can take the weight. I found with an honest tyre place there was little difference between the camper and van tyre except for availability.

Personally I wouldn't spend the extra on "Camper" specific tyres. I did ask the question at my local independant tyre supplier and they in tern asked their supplier, he simply said "Camper" tyres have a slightly different side wall outer skin which is supposed to resist cracking due to ultra violet. I only ever worry about the size weight and speed ratings.

After all, would I standard commercial tyre somehow know its fitted on a motorhome, and suddenly fall apart? I doubt it.

That's interesting given that most campers cover very low mileages so may well be on a van much longer than the tyres on yer average truck. Plus they are often stored for long periods & may be exposed to sunlight (err, if it ever shines) for quite long periods too.

So yer pays yer money & yer takes yer choice!

the one thing I never take chances on is tyres! You are in a vehicle of aprox 3.5 tonne, carrying you and your loved ones around inside it. Is it worth the risk not having the correct tyres??
From what I understand, the "camper" tyres are designed for heavier vehicles and have stronger side walls to prevent roll when cornering.
Make sure whatever you get is correct for your vehicles weight and size and has a good date stamp on too.

Not sure about legislation regarding tyres, but of course it depends on the size of your van, as I understand it for larger vans as I have which is a 8mtr @ 3.8 tonnes you are better going for a specific camper tyre. Michelin do an 8ply Camping tyre for this application, it capable of taking the higher pressures required, beware of lesser tyres as recommended by some suppliers as they don't have the stiffer walls!!!

I take it you haven't read the thread & the excellent references then? It has little to do with weight, many similar sized box vans carry far heavier loads when full & cover much higher mileages. It's about low mileage & relatively low load vehicles having tyres that may UV degrade before they wear out.

but would you still want to carry your loved ones around with the wrong tyres on??
I will let you guys sort out the technical bits, I was just saying don't skrimp on cheap tyres, get what's right for the vehicle.

As long as you get correct rated tyres, the budget V premium brands is very debatable, and some budget brands have a good reputation. If you've got an older coachbuilt van, only do a few thousand miles a year and never go over 60MPH, I'd say your chucking your money away getting a premium brand. On the other hand if you have a modern van and you enjoy hammering along motorways, do 15000+ miles a year, then premiums are the way.
