i think that towing a trailer /caravan etc should have a test (@£15 paid mostly to charity!!)yearly and be restricted to 50mph on motorways, reason being , many peeps tow once a year, and lots fly down the motorways at 60/70mph just because 'they can', i drive an hi-top van and used to drive lorries and now and again the side winds will catch you out causin' you to go off a straightline, once a car/trailer starts to snake its as hard to control as a front tyre blowout!! i've seen peeps have top notch vehicles with top notch caravans and no anti-snake bar?????
complacency kills

i had a few wobbles when i was a (tugger) this is why i never went to far on motorways.

A lot of the problem with caravans is that they're stood still for very long periods, normally in outside storage areas, then used maybe once or twice a year.

This outside storage and the van being static helps to encourage perishing of the sidewalls from the UV action of sunlight. This weakens the tyre sidewalls and when the van is towed on holiday there is the possibility of a blowout and subsequent major damage and / or injury.

Even with a fairly new van the chassis may have been sitting in outside storage in a makers yard for a long time before the body gets built on to it.

Every time we go out in our van at this time of year we see at least two tuggers with blown van tyres on the hard shoulder, and these are'nt normally old vans either!, and why are spare wheels not fitted as standard on caravans?? Even our 1990 Adria came with a spare wheel when we were tuggers!!!

Heading from York to Leeds on A64 today Steady 60mph. Raining and spray making the road conditions b----- awful. Overtaken by a tugger. Jaguar with a large van. Must have been over 70mph.
It's no wonder we see so many stories like yours.

I've never understood why trailers don't need to be MOT'd, HGV's excepted.

A complete no brainer that!

Many new vans have the stabaliser built into the coupling now so the old fasioned bar is not needed AlKo AKS 3004 Stabiliser Triple UK pack

A yearly mot as stated would be a good way forwards also a test for people who want to tow any trailer

Having said that I have also seen people who clearly only drive their motorhome 2 or 3 times a year cruising fully loaded at 80 mph with no comprehension of their stopping distance and how much space they need in front of them

The one that reversed into a caravan on a site when he had a whole field to turn around in makes me shudder. Sadly many MH's seem to be bought by elderly people who would probably have problems controling a small car let alone 3.5 tonnes of large van :D:D

i did feel sorry for them as we passed the incedent as a ex tugger i no what it feels like when van starts to sway after a big artic passes you. as you no we are now motor home owner and have never looked back and we turned into wild campers

I think there are a couple of tuggers on here still

Que???
