Not done it but its a consideration for us. Everyone keeps saying Spain or Portugal but I hate Spain and wondered about French / Italian med coast or perhaps Sicily. I know a few MH's go to Sicily and from my research so far its not as warm as Spain or Portugal but it doesnt look bad. To be honest I looked at the weather in Nice area in winter on the net and its generally between 12-16 degrees with 5 hours average sun so presumably Italian med coast will be similar, I dont know! To me thats a shed load better than England and unlikely to be full of other MH's! We do Scotland and the islands in winter and enjoy it so surely anywhere south of there is going to feel tropical in comparison?

To us its not just about the weather, just want to get away!

We were in Italy a few years ago, around the end of January. Went right down to Sicily and I couldn't really say it was warm. You are likely to get some warm days but Southern Spain is usually warmer. If you don't want Spain or Portugal, southern Greece may be a better bet, or even Crete?

Italy is relatively expensive, compared to France and Spain.

For guaranteed warmth and low prices it has to be Morocco...

Hi Galaxy,

We visit Italy at least once a year, in fact we are off on monday, (extended family live just south of Milan) we have gone in May & also in December.During winter months southern Italy is warm, northern Italy can be cold, foggy & possibly wet. We like to buy from local markets throughout Europe, so costs are kept down, fuel is a bit cheaper, but you pay Autostrada tolls. Wild camping in Italy is like most places, be discreet & off the beaten track. Out of season many campsites remain open ( some are working vinyards ) & good deals can be struck for 2/3 or 7 day stays for the times when you reelly reelly need a campsite. Alan rogers guides or Camperstop are well worth buying before you leave.

Thanks Dezi.

We were thinking of heading off from Stuttgart end of February and heading for Italy, Balkans and Greece - ending before the Summer in Greece and heading back home for winter in the north of Oz. Hate summer anywhere south of central France.

Good to know that the weather will be reasonably moderate for most of that time.

Thanx for that, were in Morocco last winter too, & have got a bit fed up with sp/port. Greece is too far as we havn't enough funds to get there but the search goes on!

No guarantees, but 3 years ago we were walking round Rome during November in T shirts. Ditto for Assisi & Naples

Been there April time and pleasantly mild, we thought about getting a ferry from South of France to avoid the drive/tolls ,might be cheap way to go in the Winter

Italy in winter can be fine.

Two years ago we travelled throughout the North, Tuscanny, the lakes, Liguria, from October till January. If you keep away from the mountains (in the centre, the coastal and lake areas are spring -like, but there is a lot of rain.

Ther are plenty of Stopover/Aires available, the Italians are very keen on Autocaravanners, so there are facilities. Often they are not particularly pristine, but adequate.

Get a copy of PORTOLANO, its the FREE AIRS GUIDE to Italy. Its publishe FREE with the maib Italian Camping Car magazine, in the Spring, but Motor Home accessory shops often have spare copies.
We have parked in starnge places. Some comunal appartment block car parks, (ask a resident for permission), The main secure car park in Lucca, and and Arezzo (huge monthy antiques market) and in Perugia.

My only problem with Italy is the Driving habits of the Italians.

Can only give experiences in Oct & Nov. Had a wet trip until we got quite a way down south.

Travelled down to the bottom of italy. Mostly up in the hills & found places to wildcamp easily. A plus was that there were a lot of communal water taps at the roadside.

In the south we went down the coast road on the east side and found it best to park at the first available spot. Then cycle into the village/town to find the best spot to stay.

Before we went we downloaded a list of sostas from an italian site. a lot had sat nav details.

Loved the sosta at Morano Calabro an old hilltop town.

In calabria in Nov we stayed at a sosta, I haven't seen listed anywhere, at Ardore Marina. When I went swimming in the afternoons, after the long 25 metre trek to the beach:D, I was the only person on the kilometre long beach.

Agree about the driving. Got overtaken against double white lines by a police car. Driver had a fag in one hand and was using the other to hold his mobile phone to his ear.

How did you get to Morroco?? Drive to southern Spain and then ferry? How much was ferry? I would love to go there paragliding.

A few years back we wintered on Sicily - the weather there is similar to southern Spain in terms of temperature but generally wetter (a bit like Portugal). The food was great, the wine even better, the people very friendly, the wildcamping opportunities good but the campsites expensive compared to France or Spain. Further north, the weather can be very iffy but along the Ligurian coast (around Genoa) the winters are mild and the weather can be a lot better than central Italy (the Rome area). Wildcamping is generally easy throughout the country. Have a good time but don't cross the men in camel-hair coats (they really do exist!).
