Trip to Galloway

Hi All.

Planning a trip to visit the area between Castle Douglas and Stranraer at the end of October for a week. Kids are off school and we are planning on wilding for the first time.
Have picked a few places especially where I think I can do some beach fishing but as we have never been to this area was wondering if anyone has got any recomendations that we could visit in the area? Nice villages or attractions that would entertain my two young teenages.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Galloway forest park has lots of interesting places to visit, cream of Galloway is a working farm which sells lovely ice cream and has an adventure play area. Also mountain bike centres at Kirroughtree, Mabie and Dalbeatie if the teenagers have bikes (hire bikes available). Raiders road forest drive is one of my fav places to park up. Enjoy your visit.

Thats great thanks. Raiders road forest looks like a must thanks for the tip. I did see the cream of galloway advertsed but it did'nt rock my boat at first, now that you have mentioned it I had a second look and it has more than I first thought.

You have been a great help thanks again.

Galloway

There are some great little beaches near the cream of Galloway,
It's a beautiful coastline.

National Trust for Scotland have an Estate called Threave near Castle Douglas - is nice - my brother was a Bat Ranger (yes Bats!!) so think they do some activities for kids/youngsters if you fancy counting bats - is also a nice estate!

We were in Kirkcudbright 2 weeks ago but stayed on the council campsite because I don't know the area very well and were only there for one night, I seen the sign for Threave Castle but never had the time to go but I looked online later and you get a ferry to the castle the cost is included in the entrance ticket price, has anyone been as it is on our to do list now ? Polarbites fish and chip shop is worth a visit it is 100 yards from the fishing boats so you can't get much fresher fish.

Threave castle is on my list now. I got to see where Archibald the Grim, Lord of Galloway lived he sounds such a nice chap. What a name LOL (currently thinking one up for the wife) I know all the neighbours say thats 'Muzz the good lookin' living over there.

Fish and chips:cool:

Thought of one for the wife 'mrs muzz the unlucky' cause she has to put up with me.

Thanks for these great ideas keep them coming.

We drove the Carrick Forest Drive from Loch Doon Castle to Loch Bradan In May. It was a surreal experience driving a motorhome along a forest road.

Dhoon Bay just outside Kirkudbright is a lovely place to stop for a night or two. We have been there twice this year. It is a large picnic area right on the beach and there's public toilets as well. We gathered dead wood from over the road and had a BBQ on the beach and then our beach fire until we were ready to settle down for the night. Make sure you try and have your fire below the high water mark so that when the tide comes in it takes the remains out with it and there is no mess left.
Hope you enjoy your stay in that area. Cheers, Bill.

The Cream of Galloway is a brilliant place for youngsters and adults alike. We visited there last month and I was surprised by what was there for everyone. We really thought the place only made and sold ice cream but we were pleasantly surprised. Enjoy!!!!!

Brighouse Bay

Seek out Brighouse Bay - people seem to fish from the rocks around there.

Do you have a grid reference for the above area you stayed at?
We will be in the area next week
Thanks

Tim

I had a static at Brighouse Bay for 5 years before I sold it and bought the MH. I kept a boat at the site and fished extensively from it and the shore, beach and rocks. The fishing is poor this time of year but comes into its own in the summer when there are plenty of mackerel and pollack. In the summer float fishing from the rocks is excellent, mackerel strip and small sand eels are the best baits. Feathering also works well. There are a few cod around also huss, doggies, flatties, mullet and bass but these are not plentifull and are very localised. Try to get some local knowledge from actual anglers in the area not the BS brigade that seem to be found in holiday spots, you know the ones I mean " I had a mate who caught 20 cod over there last month" etc.
Tight lines, Tompa.

Isle of Whithorn & Wigtown Harbour

Nice spots (wild)

IOW fishing harbour and showers (pay)
Wigtown very quiet but nice nature reserve..water.. Harbour Master very good
Large area to stay.

Not too much for youngsters maybe fishing trips from IOW
