Travelling to Bologna - what to see and best place to stay

We are travelling down to Bologna Italy vis Switzerland in a weeks time on route to Croatia. So planning to stay in this area for a few days but the beach and campsites on the coast look a bit uninviting and the city seems to have very little options on a decent place to camp. Any one got any good ideas on this? Cheers all.

I had a look at Mantova on my way past to Slovenia in March. Did not stay there overnight but went to a full facility sosta in Mirandola. All free including electric. Fairly underwhelming place.
