Hello. We are planning 4 weeks of motorhoming in Greece in April. We would appreciate any comments from recent travellers there regarding general conditions, such as availability of food, fuel and general hospitality. Thanks for any help available.

4 weeks will be a bit hectic, try a bit longer, are you getting a ferry from one of the Italian ports?
Have a look at this site it will give you most of the info you require. Enjoy your trip.

Greece

I go to Greece most years as i lived in Athens for 10 years you will find european supermarkets in most towns lidl or carrafour plenty of petrol stations best prices in towns you will find lots of english speaking Greeks even in small villages you can watch a lot of Greek tv programes as they do not dub them but use subtitles.water is no problem penty of public taps all water is potable unless marked otherwise. You can wild camp in most places although illeagal just move if told to by the police. The best beaches are in polepeneso. If you visit Athens park in one more upmarket areas close to the metro i spent 4 days parked in Iraklio while visiting freinds.Dont forget if you are driving you have to give way to traffic comming on to roundabout unlike the rest of Europe also if you are crossing the road 95% of Greek drivers ignore crossings even when lights are on red.

Paradise for free camping

We planned 4 weeks - ended up spening 6 weeks there last year and still need to go back for more! Paradise for free campers – one evening I was approached by a policeman whilst parked up on a harbour by a sign that clearly said ’No Camping’. Asked if I was staying the night I said ‘just tonight’ to which he replied ‘OK – no problem’
The camp-on-board Venice to Patras is a Must Do – and so cheap.
My only problem was re-filling bottles – not so easy as we thought.

Here are 2 Sat Nav co-ordinates:
The 1st at Nafplio is a Gas shop selling anything in a cylinder. Had to wait overnight in the nearby free camping Aire at the harbour for return of my cylinder (French, but all types possible)
This is at N 3734’25”, E2248’15” Street: Megalou Alexandrou, Nafplio in the Peloponnese.

An LPG garage near Volos North(ish) Greece filled the same bottle without hesitation.
This is at N3917’44”, E2253’04” address: Komvou Mikrothivon-Volou 30, Nea Anchialos, Greece.

Every body says gas in Patras – no problem. Not true - recently there has been a health and safety scare and not one of the three LPG garages would touch a re-fill.
Wasted a day and a half searching there.
