I’ve been online searching and searching without much success. Who provides cover that allows for a European trip of up to the maximum 90 days we are allowed because of B*****

The added concern is over 70, me not her, and both with several medical issues. I can find many companies that will cover up to 30 days, but I want to be away 40, 50, 60 or so maybe.

Up until a couple of years ago we’ve never had cover and then we were with LV who won’t cover Sue’s COPD , and Staysure we used previously, now seem to limit the time away to 30 days. Confused.com I definitely am. (And they were rubbish as well)

So, any suggestions?

Also must we have cover? I always felt if it wasn’t covered by the EHIC card then we would simply pay.

It's now a ghic card. So you need new ones. They are free.
If a hospital is needed you need to go to a public one not a private one .you then get the same cover/ treatment as a local.
Ours got cut to 60 days with our bank account.never bothered looking anywhere else.

Ours is still valid until March 2029 and they wouldn’t give me a ghic card until they expired.

We have ours through the Nationwide Flex Plus account. You get basic cover included (the account fee is, I think, £19 per month) and pay top-up charges for pre-existing health conditions and extended trips. We haven't done 90 days because of house unoccupancy but they might be worth looking at.

I buy single trip insurance using one of the comparison websites. 90 day cover is not a problem.

If you use a cashback site such as Quidco and their travel insurance comparisons you get a healthy chunk of cashback too!

GHIC only covers emergency care and FCDO advice is to ensure that you have private travel insurance for non-emergency events. There is a possibility that the absence of such a policy could lead to refusal of entry because of the potential burden that you could create for the country of arrival, but I'm not aware of any such checks or enforcement action to date. Is it worth speaking to LV to see whether they would exclude the COPD cover element, but leave everything else in place? Alternatively, AXA Insurance has a cheap 'Visa Entry' Travel Policy that automatically excludes cover for pre-existing conditions - you can email them before committing to the policy for clarification that COPD and any related side effects etc can be excluded; I would pre-empt any refusal by advising AXA that your GP has not advised against taking your trip.

Re your final sentence - if you needed a repatriation to UK, could you stump up the cost of the flight? If you can, do you want to adopt me? :ROFLMAO:

Try NFOP basically Civil Service insurance.
Once accepted, not strict on most pre-existing conditions, they will keep providing cover over 80s etc

But as pointed out by Simon, the original poster, NFOP do not accept people with COPD and other breathing related health issues.

£18 N/W I am not covered as I am 84 so I just wing it

Avanti travel insurance will give 90 days cover as an add on to one of their base policies.

I had quotes from them last week for £305 for annual cover on the base policy, plus an extra £185 to extend to 90 days.

We have “free” travel insurance up to 50 days through a bank account at RBS, but they won’t cover me and they want an extra £100 to extend my wife’s cover to 90 days.

I think I will be trying the NFOP policy because it seems like it’s hassle free as long as you are well enough to travel and you don’t have any breathing related conditions, and European trips are covered up to 65 days

Not so long ago, I experienced the same issue. Companies like AllClear or Avanti are typically a little more accommodating when it comes to longer travels and health concerns, so you might want to check them out. It's worth buying insurance, in my opinion. The EHIC/GHIC is useful, but it doesn't cover everything, and if something goes wrong, the costs can be high.
