Keep off the main highways and you need to pay NO tolls in Switzerland or Italy. Figure out your journey stage by stage and you should be fine. You also get to see the most spectualer views if you keep of the fast roads.

We crossed Switzerland from south-west to north-east without using main toll roads BUT you need to keep a very sharp eye out for the toll-road signs or you WILL end up on a toll road. You will also have a very slow journey through ever town on the way. We did accidentally end up on toll roads for the shortest possible difference a couple of times because of confusing signs and that could have cost us a couple of hundred euro instead of the standard 40 euro so next time we would probably pay up for peace of mind and still use the secondary roads anyway.
Wouldn't hurt them to issue a travellers version for say half price good for a month - although really, 40 euro isn't all that much compared to the tolls payable on similar distances in France or Spain.
Back to the OP. Isn't the overall cost of your journey going to be so high that there is little point worrying about a slight difference in toll charges. Just plan your route according to what you want to achieve and just pay whatever tolls or purchase the sticker as required

Thanks for your reply Tony Lee you've just about answered my question, unfortunately I dont have time to use the scenic route on this trip, so it looks like the best option is the German /Austria direction, to go the other way incurres tolls in France & switzerland not much difference in the distance & I can pick up cheap fuel in Luxembourg.
Do you know if the Austrian toll includes the Brenner pass? Chass.

Toll route
Hi Chass,
We drove down last year via Germany and Austria in to Italy and we went through the fern pass. our first toll was as we entered Austria and at 8 euros for a vinette that sticks on your screen it quite good, the roads are fine too. you buy them at garages or shops.

Hi Chass..
Drove from Calais to San Remo, through Switzerland, then back up through Paris to Calais..worked out it would cost 200 euro in tolls..It worked out to be 210 euros..If you want to get somewhere quick then use the toll roads otherwise go the back roads.The Swiss charged me 40 euros for a sticker that lasts 1 year to use there tollways..The french roads were the most expensive.Hope some of this helps[I[/I]
