Toast

Okay so not sure if this has been covered before, but I'm in the van currently and hungry! I always wish I had a toaster!
Does anyone have any advice of how to make toast using just a gas hob?
Any thoughts would be great or tips and advice!

Cheers!

Use a heavy cast iron grill pan. Can even make toast in a frying pan.

Fix the slice of bread on the end of a fork or knife, the longer the handle the better. Hold the bread a few inches away from the flame until browned, then do the same to the other side! A toasting fork would be very handy!

Let us know how it goes!! :)

We use one of those wire mesh thingies, like Scampa but a bit more technical !. Very successfull.
If we are in to 'toasting', champagne anyone ??.

No rain in Worcester at the moment. I'm going to move out of the city centre though,

One can also get a thing to go on the hob which stands up the bread with metal wire bits the right distance from the flame which comes through holes in a perforated plate. Easier to use a fryng pan however :lol-053:

Actually, I carry an electric toaster. But you wouldn't believe the length of the extension lead you need to carry when you're wilding!! Cheers

(ok, I fibbed.... I use my gas grill really!)

How's the toast coming along Mikey? If you're really hungry, you can just eat the bread!

Made some more with brown bread in frying pan today. Just dry fry it, and turn now and then, very simple.

Your method sounds too tempting Firefox, I probably couldn't resist throwing in an egg & a couple of rashers at the same time. Why waste gas on just toast ??!!
Congratulations on finding somewhere where it's not raining - where you off to next ?.

I am now on Kangooroo's drive in Ross-on-Wye... hook up provided, thanks Kangooroo!! I haven't had a hook up all week.

The Gelert style toaster, although it only makes one slice at a time,is far superior to the pyramid models.
This model is the best 2 slices at a time Home
It can be found with a bit of searching,it used to be sold at the shows and was also imported by an Irish firm. There have also been reports of it being available in European dealers.
Worth finding,it makes toast second only to NAAFI toast!

Primus folding toaster - only one slice at a time but works well.

Ive used the pyramid type when camping worked well but it used to get red hot and easy to get burnt fingers if you tried to move it. I like the dry fry method, never tried that.

I have a mesh square, similar to the top of the stand you put over a bunsen burner, if you can remember back to your chemistry lessons. It's dead simple but dry frying sounds just as good-will try it.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

In the end I had a nice bacon sandwich... now that is a favourite in my van!

Tried both frying pan and also just putting in on the gas ring lol... think I need one of those ones you mentioned designed for camping... what can i say i love a bit of toast and tea :)

Cheers!

PS dry frying in the pan didn't seem to do a lot to the bread but the pan got bloomin hot! anyone had success with this?

where else could you talk about toast apart from on WC?)
